Team: Arizona Diamondbacks
Total Saves: 14
Closer: Paul Sewald
(6/2) D'Backs closer Paul Sewald opened the 2024 season on the injured list with a strained oblique. During his absence, Kevin Ginkel operated as Arizona's primary closer, but he's back to a setup role with Sewald returning in early May. Sewald has converted all 4 of his save chances thus far and has high security in his role.

Atlanta Braves
Team: Atlanta Braves
Total Saves: 18
Next in Line: A.J. Minter 15-Day IL, Joe Jimenez
(6/2) Raisel Iglesias isn't striking out many batters in 2024 with a career-low 18.6% strikeout rate through early June, but he's still getting the job done in the ninth inning with 14 saves in 16 chances. With A.J. Minter (hip) currently on the IL, Joe Jimenez and Pierce Johnson move up a rung in this hierarchy.

  1. 6/29:A.J. Minter, who logged his first save of the season Tuesday at Philadelphia, has appeared in 3 games in 4 days. This makes Will Smith the likeliest candidate for a save chance if one were to arise Wednesday.
Baltimore Orioles
Team: Baltimore Orioles
Total Saves: 19
Next in Line: Yennier Cano , Jacob Webb
(6/1) With Felix Bautista (elbow) rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and expected to miss the entire 2024 season, Craig Kimbrel has served as Baltimore's closer in 2024. Kimbrel appears to have overcome the back issues that plagued him last month, going 7.2 innings without allowing a hit. He's recorded 10 strikeouts during that span and has an impressive 3.00 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 31:9 K:BB across 21 innings this season. Jacob Webb and Yennier Cano represent ancillary save options should Kimbrel be unavailable.

Boston Red Sox
Team: Boston Red Sox
Total Saves: 12
Next in Line: Chris Martin 15-Day IL, Justin Slaten
(6/2) Kenley Jansen appears to have overcome the command and control issues that plagued him in early April. Since the middle of April, he has a 14:2 K:BB ratio over 12 innings, lowering his walk rate from 20+ percent to 13.3 percent. It's still a high mark, but is much better than it was trending earlier this season. Jansen's security as the Red Sox closer is high, but the pending free-agent could be on the move later this summer if Boston slips in the AL East standings. Veteran setup man Chris Martin is in the same bucket, which could leave the door wide open for Rule 5 pick Justin Slaten to step into closing duties.

Team Notes
  1. 6/27:Tanner Houck was placed on the restricted list Monday prior to Boston's three-game series at Toronto. Matt Strahm and John Schreiber are the likeliest candidates for save opportunities should any arise during the series.
  2. 10/11:Hansel Robles exited Game 3 of the ALDS on Sunday due to a stomach illness after allowing two runs in two-thirds of an inning. He should be considered day-to-day due to his illness. Assuming he tests negative for COVID-19, it wouldn't be surprising to see the right-hander available for Game 4 on Monday. It was the first earned run he's allowed since August 29.
  3. 10/5:Entering tonight's AL Wild Card game against the Yankees, Hansel Robles has not allowed an earned run in 15 consecutive outings. Both he and Adam Ottavino enter tonight's contest with two-days rest, while Garrett Richards and Garrett Whitlock have had one day of rest after both pitched on Sunday.
Chicago Cubs
Team: Chicago Cubs
Total Saves: 14
(6/2) Cubs 2023 closer Adbert Alzolay (forearm) struggled earlier this season and subsequently relinquished closing duties before hitting the IL with a forearm strain. With Julian Merryweather (ribs) also on the 60-day IL, veteran Hector Neris assumed the closer role in late-April. Neris hasn't racked up many saves of late with the Cubs currently struggling, but does have 6 of the team's last 7 saves to give him some security in the role. Mark Leiter has been successful in setup role this season and is presumably next-in-line for saves should Neris stumble.

Cincinnati Reds
Team: Cincinnati Reds
Total Saves: 13
Closer: Alexis Diaz
(6/2) After racking up 9 wins and 37 saves last season, Alexis Diaz was expected to regress a bit in those categories. The Reds have just 12 saves as a team through early-June, but Diaz has recorded 11 of them for a 91.7% team save share. However, Diaz's walk and strikeout rates are trending in the wrong direction this season, so his stability as the Reds closer is in question. Lucas Sims and Fernando Cruz are the most likely candidates to take over closing duties should Diaz's struggles continue, especially with Emilio Pagan (triceps) currently on the IL.

Cleveland Guardians
Team: Cleveland Guardians
Total Saves: 22
Next in Line: Scott Barlow , Cade Smith
(6/2) After leading MLB in saves the past two seasons, Emmanuel Clase is once again at the top of the leaderboard through early-June. The hard-throwing righty is displaying impeccable control while improving his strikeout rate through the first month of the season. With 2023 setup man Trevor Stephan (elbow) out for the year, Scott Barlow has taken on that role while Cade Smith and Hunter Gaddis have ascended the leverage ladder to important setup roles.

Colorado Rockies
Team: Colorado Rockies
Total Saves: 13
Closer: Committee
(6/3) Jalen Beeks sub-20 percent strikeout rate and 11 percent walk rate aren't what you'd typically see from a closer, but the southpaw been getting the job done in the 9th inning as of late for Colorado. Beeks has recorded 6 of the Rockies' last 9 saves, with Tyler Kinley picking up two of his own during that stretch. Justin Lawrence (shoulder) picked up 2 saves in April, but is currently on the IL with a shoulder strain. Nick Mears and Victor Vodnik have shown glimpses of promise, but this is ultimately a team to avoid if one wants to protect ratios, as nearly all of the high leverage options in this bullpen have walk rates over 10 percent. Not to mention, Colorado ranks near the bottom of the league with just 12 saves as a team through early-June, so save chances will be limited no matter who is closing for the Rockies.

Chicago White Sox
Team: Chicago White Sox
Total Saves: 10
Closer: Committee
(6/2) The White Sox have lost 14 of their last 15 games dating back to mid-May, so save chances have been difficult to come by. In fact, they haven't converted a save since May 15, which was recorded by Michael Kopech. Kopech tallied 3 of Chicago's 6 saves last month, with Tanner Banks, Jordan Leasure and John Brebbia picking up the others. Kopech has been inconsistent this season and has had trouble with his command, but should be considered the favorite for saves for the time being. He is a trade candidate, so the White Sox closer role could be in flux all season.

Detroit Tigers
Team: Detroit Tigers
Total Saves: 15
Closer: Jason Foley
(6/3) Jason Foley has racked up 11 of Detroit's 14 saves through early June for a respectable 78.5% team save share. The Tigers' 2023 closer, Alex Lange, was demoted to the minors in late-May due to control issues, so Tyler Holton and Andrew Chafin have ascended the leverage ladder with Shelby Miller on his way back from an elbow injury. While Foley hasn't been overly impressive this season (sub-20% strikeout rate, 1.39 WHIP), he currently has a pretty solid grasp on closing duties.

Houston Astros
Team: Houston Astros
Total Saves: 12
Closer: Josh Hader
(6/3) Josh Hader's first season in Houston got off to a rough start in April, but the southpaw's performance has stabilized of late with a 1.26 ERA, 0.70 WHIP and 23:4 K:BB over 14.1 innings in May. The Astros still rank near the bottom of the majors with 10 saves as a team, but more save chances should arise as Houston plays more competitive ball. They went 15-14 last month, so those rostering Hader might feel more optimistic about his save prospects for the rest of the season. Hader's security as the Astros' closer remains very high, as Ryan Preslly and Bryan Abreu haven't been as sharp as they have been in recent years.

  1. 7/1:Ryan Pressly has recorded a Save in each of the past 2 days. He has yet to work 3 games in a row this season, so it's likely a save chance would go to Rafael Montero on Friday.
  2. 9/29:Ryan Pressly is currently managing a knee issue and hasn't pitched since Saturday. Kendall Graveman was placed on the paternity list Tuesday. Look for Ryne Stanek or Yimi Garcia as the favorites to pitch in potential save opportunities for the next couple days if Pressley remains unavailable.
Kansas City Royals
Team: Kansas City Royals
Total Saves: 18
(6/4) Across 10 May innings, Royals closer James McArthur struggled to a 9.00 ERA and 1.90 WHIP with three blown saves. While his stability has taken a slight hit, his bullpen mates in Kansas City haven't exactly performed well either. One might expect veterans John Schreiber, Chris Stratton or Will Smith to be next in line for saves, but that nod might actually go to Angel Zerpa. Zerpa has yet to get a look in the 9th inning, but he's been gaining traction in leverage spots and has been one of the Royals' most effective relievers over the first quarter-plus of the campaign.

Los Angeles Angels
Team: Los Angeles Angels
Total Saves: 15
Next in Line: Luis Garcia , Matt Moore
(6/4) In the final year of his contract with the Angels, Carlos Estevez continues to serve as the team's primary closer. He's been solid through the two months of the season, tallying 9 of the club's 13 saves overall. With newly-signed Robert Stephenson undergoing Tommy John surgery in April, it has been Luis Garcia filling in for ancillary saves. Matt Moore and Adam Cimber are also candidates for the occasional save chance. Like Estevez, all three are free-agents after this season, making them likely trade candidates if the Angels continue to fall out of playoff contention as the season progresses. As such, keep tabs on Carson Fulmer and Ben Joyce as closer candidates for the 2nd half.

  1. 10/14:Corey Knebel will serve as the opener for Thursday's NLDS Game 5 matchup against the Giants. Knebel filled the opener role four times during the regular season, allowing one run in a combined 5.2 innings of work. Julio Urias is expected to follow him in bulk relief.
  2. 10/6:The Dodgers' highest-leverage relievers are well rested, as Jansen, Treinen and Vesia enter Wednesday's NL Wild Card game against the Cardinals on 4 days rest.
Miami Marlins
Team: Miami Marlins
Total Saves: 9
Next in Line: A.J. Puk , Andrew Nardi
(6/4) Tanner Scott battled command and control issues during spring training and those struggles carried over into April. However, the southpaw hasn't permitted an earned run since mid-April, compiling a 1.09 WHIP and 16:8 K:BB over his last 15.1 innings, with 4 wins and 6 saves during the streak. Scott is a free-agent after this season, so the non-contending Marlins will continue building up his trade value as the team's closer before the deadline. Keep an eye on A.J. Puk, Anthony Bender and Andrew Nardi as potential second-half save candidates, with Declan Cronin a dark horse candidate.

Milwaukee Brewers

Total Saves: 20
(6/5) Devin Williams opened the 2024 campaign on the IL with two stress fractures in his back and expected to be sidelined until around the All-Star break. In his absence, the Brewers have turned to several different relievers for ninth inning duties. Abner Uribe picked up a few saves early in the season before he was subsequently demoted to the minors. Joel Payamps was next in line, but manager Pat Murphy's preferred option since late-April has been Trevor Megill, who has recorded 8 of Milwaukee's 20 saves overall. Megill posted an 18:1 K:BB ratio over 9.1 innings last month and currently sports a career-best 36.9 percent strikeout rate and 6.2 percent walk rate. Health permitting, expect Megill to hold down the closer role until Williams returns.

(6/4) Twins closer Jhoan Duran missed the first month of the season with an oblique injury that he suffered during spring training, but he's racked up double-digit saves already through early June. However, manager Rocco Baldelli has shown a willingness to call Duran's number in high-leverage spots outside of the 9th-inning as well. Griffin Jax (5 saves through early June) and Caleb Thielbar (3) stand to benefit when that happens, but Duran has recorded Minnesota's past seven saves dating back to mid-May.

(6/5) Clay Holmes has racked up 17 of the Yankees' 22 saves through early June for an impressive 77% team save share. This is a 22.5% increase over last year's career-high mark. Holmes has been outstanding, only recently giving up his first earned runs of the 2024 campaign on May 20. He's been scoreless is all of his other outings thus far. There's always a chance Yankees manager Aaron Boone is more fluid with his late-inning usage as the season progresses, which tempers Holmes' stability from reaching 'Very High' status. Caleb Ferguson, Ian Hamilton and Victor Gonzalez are next in line for saves.

  1. 7/1:Aroldis Chapman was activated from the 15-day IL. Clay Holmes has worked 3 games in the last 5 days, but did not pitch yesterday. Don't be surprised if the Yankees elect to give Holmes another day of rest with Chapman back. It's possible Chapman gets the call tonight if a save opportunity were to arise.
  2. 6/29:Aroldis Chapman is likely to return Friday.
  3. 10/5:Entering tonight's AL Wild Card game, Aroldis Chapman has a career 6.43 ERA and 2.07 WHIP in 14 innings at Fenway Park. However, he logged a 2.70 ERA against Boston this season with a 8:4 K:BB in 6.2 innings, albeit with two home runs allowed.
  4. 9/29:Jonathan Loaisiga (shoulder) will likely be activated Wednesday.
Oakland Athletics
Team: Oakland Athletics
Total Saves: 15
Next in Line: Lucas Erceg 15-Day IL, Austin Adams
(6/5) Mason Miller was a force to be reckoned with during spring training and has showcased his dominance through the first two months of the 2024 season. In a few short weeks, he went from the 'possible' A's closer to their bona-fide 9th-inning man while routinely hitting triple-digits on the radar gun. The only things holding Miller back from entering top-tier closer status are his health and the competitiveness of his team. Oakland will be monitoring Miller's workload in 2024 after his missed a significant chunk of the 2023 campaign. (6/5) Jose Alvarado was the market's favorite to close in Philadelphia during draft season and the southpaw currently leads the team with 10 of their 18 saves. The southpaw isn't striking as many batters out this season - his 25% strikeout rate is his lowest since his rookie season - but his walk percentage is a actually few ticks below double digits. While Alvarado has a 56% team save share, Jeff Hoffman remains in the mix to close with 5 saves and a team-high 8 holds. Hoffman generally lines up with the opposing team's toughest lineup pocket in the late innings. Orion Kerkering has closer-of-the-future upside and has been outstanding since returning in mid-April from a forearm strain and illness.

Pittsburgh Pirates
Team: Pittsburgh Pirates
Total Saves: 17
(6/5) After recording 39 saves last season (T-2nd in the league), Pirates closer David Bednar entered 2024 with high security. However, the Pittsburgh native got off to a worrying start in 2024, blowing 3 of his first 4 save chances. A lack of reps during spring training was to blame, and since those early struggles, Bednar has recorded 11 straight saves for the Pirates. His 5.92 ERA and 1.23 WHIP leave a lot to be desired, which tempers his stability a bit. While Aroldis Chapman is the most experienced fallback option should Bednar be unavailable, he has a 25% walk rate and only 1 save through early June. Colin Holderman has been outstanding and might be the better backup to Bednar, though he has yet to record a save in 2024.

Total Saves: 18
(6/5) New manager Mike Shildt declined to name a closer during spring training, but Robert Suarez is an impressive 17-for-17 in save chances this season and has racked up all but one of the Padres' saves through early June. A strong argument can be made that Suarez deserves a 'Very High' stability tag, but his health history prevents him from joining that elite tier. Many drafters speculated that Yuki Matsui would emerge as a possible save source after he signed a 5-year deal with San Diego in December, but he's yet to record one and has struggled recently with a ballooned 16% walk rate. Instead, Jeremiah Estrada has quickly climbed this hierarchy with his elite ratios and remarkable strikeout prowess. If Suarez gets hurt, Estrada is most certainly next in line.

(6/5) With Matt Brash (elbow) undergoing Tommy John surgery and Gregory Santos (lat) out until July, the back-end of the Mariners bullpen was already pretty thin. Now news broke that closer Andres Munoz has been dealing with a lower back strain for the past few weeks. Munoz was removed from an early-June appearance after a collision at home plate and is scheduled for an MRI to determine the severity of the strain. Those rostering Munoz may wish to back him up with Ryne Stanek as insurance. (6/5) After cementing himself as one of the top closers in the game last season, Camilo Doval hasn't been sharp in 2024. He's recorded 9 of the Giants' 10 saves through early June, so his security doesn't appear to be in jeopardy, but he'll need to improve his 1.63 WHIP and 15.6% walk rate to continue receiving the bulk of save chances in San Francisco. 1. 5/18:Camilo Doval has recorded a save in 3 straight games for San Francisco. The Giants are off on Thursday, but Doval may get a breather on Friday after his recent heavy usage.
  2. 10/4:The Giants bullpen gets a much-needed break after winning the NL West. Camilo Doval, in particular, pitched 4 times in 5 days during the final week.
  3. 10/1:Doval, Rogers and Leone have worked 2 out of the past 3 games, with Rogers throwing 47 pitches over that span. Strong possibility Rogers gets the night off against San Diego.
  4. 9/30:Doval earned his 2nd big-league save on Wednesday and may be the new closer in San Francisco.
  5. 9/29:The plans for Jake McGee (oblique) beyond Wednesday aren't entirely clear, but so long as he gets through mound work without any setbacks, a return to the Giants' bullpen for the final regular-season series against the Padres might not be out of the question.
St. Louis Cardinals
Team: St. Louis Cardinals
Total Saves: 22
(6/5) Ryan Helsley is first in the majors to reach 20 saves in 2024, marking the first time in his career he's reached that milestone. With a more experienced bullpen to call upon, manager Oliver Marmol expressed his desire to deploy Helsley in a more traditional closer role this season. So far, that's paying off for fantasy managers who took the risk on Helsley's health history and drafted him for his elite skills. Josh Fleming, JT Chargois, Pete Fairbanks, J.P.
