2024 Fantasy Outlook
Smith-Schuster appeared ticketed for a prominent role after signing with the Patriots in free agency. Instead, the receiver turned in the worst season of his career. Smith-Schuster was limited to fewer than 15 yards in seven of 11 games before going on injured reserve in Week 15 with an ankle injury. Even though he’s only 27 years old, it’s fair to question if the receiver’s best days are behind him. Based on last year’s performance, Smith-Schuster will likely be ignored in many fantasy drafts. Played through injury in 2023
Smith-Schuster said Monday at the start of OTAs that he never reached 100 percent health during the 2023 season, Chris Mason of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Smith-Schuster said the last 12 months have made a "big difference," and he estimated that last offseason he was only at 60 percent health due to a lingering knee injury. Across 11 games in 2023, he was an afterthought in New England's offense, finishing with just a 29-260-1 receiving line despite little established competition at the position. If truly healthier and now able to move better, Smith-Schuster could earn more consistent targets from Jacoby Brissett and Drake Maye, though the Patriots' wide receiver corps has gotten more crowded with the additions of rookies Ja'Lynn Polk and Javon Baker, plus free-agent addition K.J. Osborn.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Days in New England may be numbered
Greg A. Bedard of BostonSportsJournal.com doesn't believe Smith-Schuster will be with the Patriots much longer.
ANALYSIS
Smith-Schuster proclaimed Monday that he's finally healthy after being limited all of last season following knee surgery in February 2023, but Bedard believes New England is ready to move on from the wideout nonetheless. The Patriots remade their receiver room in the offseason, adding K.J. Osborn as a free agent in addition to drafting Ja'Lynn Polk and Javon Baker in the second and fourth rounds, respectively. The 27-year-old Smith-Schuster isn't as good of a fit for New England's rebuilding timeline and would likely prefer to play for a contender such as the Chiefs, with whom he won the Super Bowl in 2022.

Smith-Schuster somewhat rehabbed his value with a one-year detour to Kansas City, putting up a 78-833-3 receiving line on 101 targets last year as a distant No. 2 to TE Travis Kelce's No. 1. The Patriots seem to like him for the big-slot role previously occupied by Jakobi Meyers, who departed for Las Vegas shortly before Smith-Schuster inked a three-year, $25.5 million deal with $16 million guaranteed at signing. That includes full guarantees on his base salaries for 2023 and 2024, meaning the 26-year-old likely will be a Patriot for at least two seasons. From a volume standpoint, he's well-positioned to exceed his targets from Kansas City, only without the benefit of QB Patrick Mahomes lifting his efficiency. A return to the production level from his early years in Pittsburgh remains highly unlikely, but it won't come as any surprise if Smith-Schuster catches 80 or 90 balls in a questionable New England offense led by third-year QB Mac Jones.
