Wins Contender Boats 300 Pole
XFINITY Series
October 21, 2022
Bayne won the pole for the Contender Boats 300 NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway Friday. He turned a fast lap of 166.667 mph.
ANALYSIS
Bayne found some speed that he didn't have in Friday's brief practice session at Homestead-Miami Speedway. He would surprise the field and edge Noah Gragson to claim the pole position for Saturday's Contender Boats 300. It was Bayne's second pole of the season and the ninth of his career. He'll be seeking his first win of 2022 in Saturday's 300-mile race at Homestead.

Joe Gibbs Racing had Ty Gibbs in this car last season, and it was a championship-winning outfit. Gibbs is gone now, advanced to the Cup Series, but this strong team remains. JGR typically has one of their teams as a "driver rotation" team. Last season it was the No. 18, but that's now Sammy Smith's full-time effort, so the No. 54 could transition into a multi-driver rotation. JGR's rotation car last year accounted for two poles, nine Top-5 and 16 Top-10 finishes and featured drivers like Trevor Bayne, Bubba Wallace, Ryan Truex and Christopher Bell along with a few others. This car has a lot of potential, but is totally dependent on the driver lineup, which remains uncertain as of this writing.
Signed a deal to race in the Xfinity Series for Joe Gibbs Racing in 2022. Bayne will make seven starts in the team's Toyota at Auto Club Speedway, Phoenix, Charlotte, Nashville, New Hampshire, Las Vegas and Homestead.
Bayne is without a ride entering the 2019 season. He is currently a free agent driver.
The driver of the No. 6 Ford posted almost identical marks for the second straight season. Bayne nabbed two Top-5 and six Top-10 finishes en route to finishing 22nd in the final driver standings. Once again his best tracks were superspeedways, followed closely by short tracks. The Roush Fenway Racing driver made great strides on the circuit's bull rings. The team returns completely intact for the upcoming season, including crew chief Matt Puccia. Bayne will be challenged to elevate his game above recent levels. Although Roush Fenway Racing has been improving and giving their drivers better cars, it's still an uphill battle in this ultra-competitive racing series. Bayne will turn 27-years-old early in the upcoming season, so he's still a young driver. However, his 166 starts of experience over the past eight years are valuable experience.
The driver of the No. 6 Ford had his most successful season of racing to this point in his career last season. Bayne collected a pair of Top 5 and five Top-10 finishes on his way to finishing the year 22nd in the driver standings. It was acceptable and encouraging improvement after his first full season of racing in 2015. Bayne now faces a new Roush Fenway Racing, a smaller stable with more limitations than ever and fewer resources. However, there could be some good news in that. With the departure of Greg Biffle, Bayne's team will receive some more attention to improvement. Matt Puccia returns at crew chief, and together the two will try to build on what they accomplished in 2016. Bayne's best tracks last season were the short tracks and super speedways, while the cookie cutter ovals were a struggle. Something to note for fantasy racing players in weekly lineup leagues.
Bayne's first full season of Sprint Cup Series racing didn't go so well last year. A mere two top-10 finishes and 29th-place finish in the final driver standings dampened what was a highly anticipated campaign. top-20 finishes each week were a real struggle, and qualifying in particular was a major problem for the No. 6 team. Bayne had a lowly 27.9 average starting position last year, showing that they were starting from nearer the end of the field than the front most weeks. The team returns unchanged from last season, and crew chief Bob Osborne will look to turn around the fortunes of this young driver. Bayne is signed at Roush through the 2017 season, so 2016 is a pivotal year. The pressure to perform will be there but how will Bayne and the team respond? That is the biggest question of all.
The Wood Brothers Racing youngster will return for a third part-time season of racing in the No. 21 Ford. Bayne competed in 16 events in 2012 and should be up for a similar slate in the upcoming season. The 21-year-old cracked the Top 10 twice last season and improved his average finish to a respectable 22.5 over the prior season’s 25.8. We should see more improvement from the Wood Brothers team in 2013. Bayne should post 3 or 4 Top 10’s and push that average finish closer to 20.0 in the new season. He and crew chief Donnie Wingo have been together for some time now, and improvement for this team is certainly in the cards.
