Puts career on hold
StrawweightUFC
November 24, 2022
Torres is pregnant and has put her UFC career on hold, MMAJunkie.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Torres was issued an indefinite medical suspension for an unspecified reason in mid-April, and she's now expecting a baby that's due in June of 2023. As a result, she's unlikely to return to the Octagon until at least late 2023 or early 2024.
Indefinite medical suspension
StrawweightUFC
April 13, 2022
Torres has been suspended indefinitely by the Florida State Boxing Commission following Saturday's loss to Mackenzie Dern, Steven Marrocco of MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
While all fighters on the UFC 273 card received some type of medical suspension, mostly of the short-term variety, Torres was the only fighter to be suspended indefinitely. While there were no noticeable injuries in her loss to Dern, the suspension means Torres will likely have to get a physician's clearance for some type of issue -- not disclosed by the commission -- before booking another fight.
Drops controversial split decision
StrawweightUFC
April 9, 2022
Torres lost to Mackenzie Dern via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 28-29) at UFC 273 on Saturday in Jacksonville.
ANALYSIS
It was a fight Torres had to have in order to continue her rise at 115 pounds, and it's a fight she may have very well deserved to win, but the call didn't go her way. Dern easily won Round 2, while Tecia won Round 3, so it was the opening frame which decided the bout. In that five minutes, Torres held a 37-28 edge in total strikes landed, while Dern failed on her only takedown attempt. Tecia has a long history of beating up on lesser opponents and coming up short against better competition. Dern certainly isn't on the same level as some of the fighters Torres has faced in the past (Rose Namajunas, Weili Zhang, Joanna Jedrzejczyk), but she's miles better than the opponents Tecia had defeated during her recent three-fight win streak (Angela Hill, Sam Hughes, Brianna Van buren). Torres is still just 32 years, so there's time for her to rebound from this defeat, but this was unquestionably a major, major setback for "The Tiny Tornado".
Taking on Dern at UFC 273
StrawweightUFC
January 12, 2022
Torres will square off against Mackenzie Dern in a strawweight bout at UFC 273 on April 9, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA reports.
ANALYSIS
Torres will be in the Octagon for the first time since defeating Angela Hill for the second time back in early August. That was her third straight win after dropping her previous three. Dern is coming off a loss to Marina Rodriguez back in October.
Rolls past Angela Hill again
StrawweightUFC
August 7, 2021
Torres defeated Angela Hill via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) at UFC 265 on Saturday in Houston.
ANALYSIS
Torres looked just as good, if not better, than she did in the first fight between the two back in June 2015. She won that won via unanimous decision also. Hill was a step behind in the striking game all night long, and Torres took full advantage. She wasn't worried about Hill's stopping power, so she could press forward when the opportunities presented themselves without fear of being damaged. Torres is undersized for the division at just 5-foot-1, and her grappling game isn't great, but she is unquestionably a high-level kickboxer. The soon-to-be 32-year-old has won three straight on the heels of a three-fight losing streak.
