Uses ground game to secure win
Mayes defeated Josh Parisian via TKO (elbows) at 3:26 of Round 3 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Mayes landed just one successful takedown in his first three UFC bouts, but that didn't stop him from connecting on 6-of-8 attempts against Parisian, good for 11:32 worth of control time. Mayes' power is still by far his valuable asset, but he wisely recognized that the only way Parisian could win this fight was on the feet and decided not to give him that opportunity. Mayes has been inconsistent throughout the earlier portion of his UFC run, posting a 2-2 record, but he has now won back-to-back fights. It was nice to see him show a different side of his game in this victory.

To face Parisian in December
Mayes (undisclosed) is set to take on Josh Parisian in a heavyweight matchup at the UFC event scheduled for Dec. 18, Mike Heck of MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mayes last fought in November of 2020, snapping a two fight losing steak with a unanimous decision over Roque Martinez. He was since scheduled to return against Tai Tuivasa in the spring, but ultimately ended up being a late withdrawal due to undisclosed reasons. He'll enter this matchup with Parisian with two-inch height and reach advantages, though it's Parisian that has the edge in striking volume (albeit over a smaller sample size). The two fighters have a combined two takedowns in the UFC, so look for this one to play out primarily on the feet.

Late withdrawal from Tuivasa fight
Mayes has withdrawn from his scheduled matchup at UFC Vegas 22 against Tai Tuivasa, John Morgan of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
It's unclear exactly what caused the late exit, but Mayes was a +175 betting underdog heading into Saturday's matchup. The promotion will now seek a short-notice replacement for Tuivasa.

Facing Tai Tuivasa in March

ANALYSIS
Mayes will return to the Octagon after picking up his first UFC win in his last bout Nov. 14, when he defeated Roque Martinez via unanimous decision in Las Vegas. He'll be taking on a veteran of the promotion in Tuivasa, who snapped a three-fight losing streak in his most recent bout in October to improve his UFC record to 4-3-0.
