Shepard might start in Thursday's road game against Pittsburgh if Darcy Kuemper, who is battling an illness, is unable to play, according to Sammi Silber of The Hockey News.

Shepard was recalled from AHL Hershey on Thursday. He has a 2.00 GAA and a .919 save percentage in 26 contests with the AHL club, but Shepard hasn't fared as well with Washington, posting a 3.19 GAA and an .894 save percentage in four outings this season. Pittsburgh is tied for 22nd offensively with 2.95 goals per game, so the Penguins would be a somewhat favorable matchup for Shepard should he get the start.
