Finishes tied for 14th at AMEX
January 22, 2024
Burgoon fired a five-under 67 in the final round of The American Express to finish in a tie for 14th place.
ANALYSIS
Burgoon's result at the AMEX was an encouraging sign after a disappointing 2023 campaign in which he made seven appearances on the Korn Ferry Tour. He's now listed as an alternate for the upcoming Farmers Insurance Open.

Burgoon earned less than $600K in official money for a second straight season as he missed 14 cuts on the PGA Tour in 2020-21, but he tied for second at the Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship during the Korn Ferry Tour Finals to retain status. The Texas A&M product has advanced to the FedExCup Playoffs just once through five full seasons on the PGA Tour, though he ranked 37th in GIR percentage in 2020-21.
Despite drastically improving his putting last season, Burgoon was only able to make nine cuts and his two best results came in events with very weak fields compared to the PGA Tour standard. Burgoon's one of those players who doesn't stand out statistically in any category and really struggles in events with above-average fields. If you take him in season-long contests, you're hoping he can maximize his results in the smaller tournaments.
Burgoon posted a career-high $1,179,616 in 2017-18 and finished 111th to 135th in three consecutive full seasons on the PGA Tour. A runner-up at the 2018 CIMB Classic and another fifth-place finish were not enough to retain status without an appearance in the Korn Ferry Tour Finals, as those were his only two finishes inside the top 30 in 20 starts. Burgoon ranked 54th or better in both GIR percentage and driving accuracy on the PGA Tour during the 2018-19 campaign, but he also finished the season at an elite ranking of eighth in proximity from over 200 yards. The 32-year-old was also nearly 100 positions worse in SG: Total. Burgoon is a boom-or-bust pick in salary cap formats for the 2019-20 season.
Burgoon just missed the top 125 during his rookie season two years ago, but he parlayed his limited playing status into full privileges for this season. A top-10 at the Quicken Loans National and a runner-up at the John Deere are to thank for Burgoon's spot in the top 125, but outside of those two finishes, he didn't get much done. In fact, Burgoon missed more cuts than he made last season, something that isn't often said about guys who finish inside the top 100 on the FedEx points list. On the bright side, Burgoon has shown the ability to finish inside the top-25, but without more consistency, he's just not a good salary cap option.
Burgoon's strong finishes at the last two events of the Web.com Tour Finals clinched him his PGA Tour card for the first time since the 2015-16 season. Burgoon's second full season on the PGA Tour this year will hopefully bring him his first top-10, but beyond that his expectations are likely quite low, and so are ours despite his solid driving and iron play. Avoid Burgoon in salary cap leagues and in draft leagues hold off until after the 10th round.
Burgoon missed 11 cuts in 27 starts in 2015-16 on the PGA Tour, including in three of his last four starts of the season. Part of the problem he'll seek to fix with some extra time off is a balky short game that left him 181st in strokes gained – around the green.
