T10 in GIR at Houston Open
April 2, 2024
Griffin carded a two-over 72 on Sunday at the Texas Children's Houston Open to finish even-par and tied for 57th.
ANALYSIS
Griffin, making his first start in over a month since February's Mexico Open, ranked T10 among the field in GIR percentage this past week at Memorial Park, but he lost 3.7 strokes on the greens in Houston. He'll tee it up again this week at the Valero Texas Open where he's a perfect 4-for-4 in cuts made, notably gaining strokes with his ball striking in all four of his previous TPC San Antonio appearances.

Griffin had another solid season making 16-of-23 cuts with a best finish of T-3 at The American Express, but his season was ended with three missed cuts before he decided to undergo back surgery. As a result, it's likely that Griffin won't tee things up until next year which limits his fantasy potential for season long players and some potential rust when he does come back.
For the second season in a row, Griffin put together a very strong early season. He posted seven top-26 finishes in his first 13 starts of the season. He only had two such finishes the remaining 16 events he played, however. Griffin ranked top-55 last season in SG: total, so there is still reason for optimism despite his poor finish to the season.
Griffin flashed his all-around prowess and gained strokes across the board throughout the 2019-20 season, which was highlighted by a win at last October's Houston Open amidst a streak of six consecutive top-20s from the Greenbrier to the Bermuda Championship. More recently, a T10 at the BMW Championship during the second leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs allowed him to advance to the Tour Championship at 16th in the standings, eying his first trip to East Lake in just his second season on the PGA Tour. In 76 measured rounds, Griffin was inside the top 100 in each strokes gained subcategory.
Relegated to the Korn Ferry Tour after a PGA Tour rookie campaign in 2018 that included missed cuts in half of his 26 showings, Griffin rebounded in a big way by finishing sixth on the KFT's Regular Season Points List in 2019. He won the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Championship in late April and threatened to go back-to-back the following week at the Dormie Network Classic, but Xinjun Zhang steered five strokes clear of his peers at the top of the leaderboard by tournament's end while Griffin tied for second. Griffin reached double-digit top-25 finishes on the KFT as he ranked eighth in birdie average and seventh in putts per round. The 31-year-old journeyman owns four total wins as a professional, but Griffin has yet to make his presence felt at the PGA Tour level.
Griffin's 2017 campaign got off to an extremely sluggish start with seven missed cuts in his first 11 events, but he bounced back tremendously with a win at the Nashville Golf Open in early July to salvage his season and earn a PGA Tour card for the first time in his career. Accuracy woes off the tee marked Griffin's Achilles' heal throughout the year, though he was still able to rank 14th in birdie average thanks to a hot putter. Griffin has appeared in just two PGA events during his career, missing the cut during both starts back in 2011.
