Weekly Rankings: Week 17 Value Meter

Weekly Rankings: Week 17 Value Meter

This article is part of our Weekly Rankings series.

Sunday Update Complete.

No Thursday or Monday games this week - just Sunday. We are pretty sure that the Chiefs won't play most of their starters, and the Steelers have already confirmed that Ben Roethlisberger won't start.

Welcome to the Weekly Value Meter Rankings. This is a guide to help you decide who to start and sit in a given week. It's is not a season-long ranking nor a draft guide, and it's also not really intended as a free agent guide. While I appreciate that you want my opinion on pickups, every league is different, and your decision on whether to add/drop a particular player might also be dictated by other factors than who is rated higher in a given week.

Here are my operating assumptions for the rankings:

- The RB/WR/TE position rankings are for PPR leagues.
- The Flex rankings are for Standard leagues.
- 1 point per 10 rushing/receiving yards.
- 1 point per 20 passing yards.
- 4 points per passing touchdowns.

These are the rankings I use when I make my start/sit decisions. Please consult the rankings first before asking "Player X vs. Player Y?" without any other mitigating factors. Of course, I welcome debate - if you think I'm wrong, let me know. But please check out the rankings first before asking your start/sit question. This truly reflects my opinion in my leagues.

These are my particular rankings. If you want a second opinion elsewhere on the site, you can see our Weekly

Starting after Week 1, the rankings for the subsequent week will first post on Tuesday nights. I will then do a set of updates before kickoff on Thursday, and again before kickoff on Sunday morning. I will post at the top of the article in bold font when ranking updates are in progress and when they're complete.

I welcome debate on the rankings in the comments. Please keep it friendly.

Quarterbacks

1.Lamar Jackson BAL at CIN
2.*Deshaun Watson HOU vs. TEN
Note: Watson hurt his throwing arm on the Texans' last offensive play of the game, but afterwards said that he'd play this week against the Titans. We'll see how he practices this week, but for now I'll treat him as if he's playing. Expected to start and play a full game.
3.*Ryan Tannehill TEN at HOU
Note: Tannehill was awful in the snow against the Packers, throwing two interceptions and losing a fumble. But he was better in fantasy than in real life, thanks to a long rushing touchdown.
4.Justin Herbert LAC at KC
5.Aaron Rodgers GB at CHI
6.*Jalen Hurts PHI vs. WAS
Note: In case you were uncertain, Hurts has officially been named the starter again this week.
7.*Baker Mayfield CLE vs. PIT
Note: Mayfield should get his wide receivers back this week, presumably, and will be up against a Steelers defense that will likely be resting many of their veterans. All four receivers are indeed back, plus the Steelers won't play at least T.J. Watt and Cameron Heyward.
8.Kirk Cousins MIN at DET
9.*Tom Brady TB vs. ATL
Note: Brady will still play despite the Bucs having wrapped up a postseason spot - a win clinches the five-seed, which is a significant advantage in terms of who they would face in the first round.
10.Russell Wilson SEA at SF
11.*Kyler Murray ARZ at LAR
Note: Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury is 'hopeful' that Murray will be in a position to play against the Rams. Chris Streveler is the backup. Put in a full practice on Wednesday, and should be good to go.
12.Matt Ryan ATL at TB
13.Drew Brees NO at CAR
14.Derek Carr LV at DEN
15.*Mitchell Trubisky CHI vs. GB
Note: It's pretty clear that the Bears are better with Trubisky than Foles, but he still makes some terrible mistakes, including an awful interception against the Jaguars in the end zone last week.
16.*Philip Rivers IND vs. JAX
Note: Rivers (toe) was a full participant in Thursday's practice.
17.*Tua Tagovailoa MIA at BUF
Note: Tagovailoa will start again this week despite getting benched for Ryan Fitzpatrick last Saturday, with Fitzpatrick leading the Dolphins to a win. Starting again this week, this time without a net as Fitzpatrick tested positive for COVID-19.
18.*C.J. Beathard SF vs. SEA
Note: Beathard will start again this week and the Niners don't plan on activating Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) from IR.
19.Drew Lock DEN vs. LV
20.Andy Dalton DAL at NYG
21.Teddy Bridgewater CAR vs. NO
22.*Josh Allen BUF vs. MIA
Note: Will the Bills consider resting their starters now that the Steelers are doing so? Or maybe just have a quick hook? That risk of either a quick hook or a full rest appears to be increasing.
23.*Matthew Stafford DET vs. MIN
Note: Stafford left with an ankle sprain on the first drive last week, but it's hard to trust him this week, even though he hopes to suit up. Stafford practiced Friday after sitting out Wednesday and Thursday, and hopes to gut it out against a Vikings team that's missing four defensive starters. Do you feel lucky?
24.*Daniel Jones NYG vs. DAL
Note: Jones (hamstring) has been playing form the pocket more and will continue to do so in the short-term.
25.*Sam Darnold NYJ at NE
Note: Darnold has gone three games in a row without an interception.
26.*Alex Smith WAS at PHI
Note: Coach Ron Rivera said that he's optimistic that Smith (calf) will be able to start this week. Finally practiced on Friday, the team won't decide on a starter until they see how Smith feels on Saturday. They promoted a third quarterback, Steven Montez, from the practice squad, to give them extra depth just in case. ***Smith has been cleared to start Sunday night's game against the Eagles.***
27.*Cam Newton NE vs. NYJ
Note: Newton got benched for Jarrett Stidham on Monday night, but it appears that Newton will start again this week against the Jets.
28.*Mike Glennon JAC at IND
Note: Coach Doug Marrone said he hasn't decided whether Glennon or Gardner Minshew will start against the Colts. Naturally. Glennon has been confirmed as the starter.
29.Brandon Allen CIN vs. BAL
30.*Mason Rudolph PIT at CLE
Note: Rudolph will get a spot start in Week 17, as the Steelers will rest Ben Roethlisberger and other veterans.
31.*Chad Henne KC vs. LAC
Note: The Chiefs have clinched the No. 1 seed in the AFC, so there's a really good chance that Henne will start and Patrick Mahomes will be rested.
32.*John Wolford LA vs. ARI
Note: Wolford will take over for Jared Goff this week. He was an undrafted rookie in 2018, played in the AFF and has been with the Rams since April 2019. He'll be backed up by Bryce Perkins and Blake Bortles, who signed with the Rams on Tuesday.
33.Taysom Hill NO at CAR
34.*Taylor Heinicke WAS at PHI
Note: Heinicke replaced Dwayne Haskins on the last two drives Sunday, throwing for 137 yards and a touchdown. Alex Smith is likely to start, but Heinicke is next in line.
35.*Patrick Mahomes KC vs. LAC
Note: Chad Henne is likely to start and give Mahomes the week off.
36.Jarrett Stidham NE vs. NYJ
37.*Ben Roethlisberger PIT at CLE
Note: Roethlisberger (and other Steelers veterans) will be rested in Week 17 against the Browns. Officially out - Joshua Dobbs will be the backup this week.
38.*Ryan Fitzpatrick MIA at BUF
Note: Tested positive for COVID-19.
39.*Dwayne Haskins at
Note: Waived by the Football Team and passed through waivers unclaimed.
40.*Jared Goff LA vs. ARI
Note: Goff suffered a broken thumb against the Seahawks, had surgery on Monday and has been declared out for Sunday's game against the Cardinals.

Running Backs

1.Derrick Henry TEN at HOU
2.Nick Chubb CLE vs. PIT
3.Jonathan Taylor IND vs. JAX
4.Austin Ekeler LAC at KC
5.David Johnson HOU vs. TEN
6.Aaron Jones GB at CHI
7.*Jeff Wilson SF vs. SEA
Note: Wilson had a monster game with Raheem Mostert out, and it could have been bigger - the Niners had two short TD passes to the fullback.
8.David Montgomery CHI vs. GB
9.*Myles Gaskin MIA at BUF
Note: Gaskin looked phenomenal in his return, taking over the primary RB duties from Salvon Ahmed.
10.*Josh Jacobs LV at DEN
Note: Jacobs required an IV at one point during Saturday's game, limiting his output, and then got extremely unlucky in later goal line situations - getting stopped at the 1-yard line and then seeing Derek Carr get a QB sneak for the TD; seeing Devontae Booker not once but twice get carries on first-and-goal from the 5; and then of course at the end of the game, purposefully not scoring twice in order to kill more clock.
11.D'Andre Swift DET vs. MIN
12.*Chris Carson SEA at SF
Note: Carson (foot) was cleared from the injury list Friday.
13.*J.K. Dobbins BAL at CIN
Note: Dobbins briefly left with a chest injury in the win over the Giants but later returned.
14.J.D. McKissic WAS at PHI
15.Ezekiel Elliott DAL at NYG
16.Melvin Gordon DEN vs. LV
17.*Ronald Jones TB vs. ATL
Note: Jones was taken off the COVID-IR on Tuesday, but it remains to be seen whether he can also return from the finger surgery he had on Dec. 15. Coach Bruce Arians said that he wants to give Jones 'a ton of work' this week.
18.Kenyan Drake ARZ at LAR
19.Kareem Hunt CLE vs. PIT
20.Wayne Gallman NYG vs. DAL
21.*Giovani Bernard CIN vs. BAL
Note: Bernard had 24 touches in the shootout with the Texans - 16 carries and eight catches, many of them on successful screen passes.
22.*Sony Michel NE vs. NYJ
Note: Damien Harris once again is out, so Michel should receive another heavy workload.
23.*Boston Scott PHI vs. WAS
Note: Scott gets another opportunity with Miles Sanders ruled out. Corey Clement, Jordan Howard and Jason Huntley could also figure in as part of the picture.
24.*Rodney Smith CAR vs. NO
Note: Next in line to start with Mike Davis doubtful with an ankle injury.
25.Zack Moss BUF vs. MIA
26.Dare Ogunbowale JAC at IND
27.*Alexander Mattison MIN at DET
Note: Mattison has been cleared from the concussion protocol. He could start with Dalvin Cook out this week.
28.*Antonio Gibson WAS at PHI
Note: Gibson (toe) was held out of practice this week, and is listed as questionable despite playing through the injury last week. Still, he needs to be downgraded some because of the risk involved and the lack of replacements available, with the Football Team playing the Sunday night game. ***Gibson is expected to be 'good to go' for Week 17, according to Field Yates of ESPN.***
29.*Ty Montgomery NO at CAR
Note: ***Montgomery will be the likely starter with Kamara and Murray out. Taysom Hill will probably also get more work out of the backfield.***
30.*Malcolm Brown LA vs. ARI
Note: Brown is the last man standing in the Rams' backfield, though it's possible that Cam Akers could return. Brown was limited in practice early in the week with a shoulder issue, but he had a full practice Friday and was removed from the injury list. ***Cam Akers is expected to try to play, but I think that Brown will start and get more carries.***
31.*James Conner PIT at CLE
Note: Conner was the more effective Steelers back last week, especially in the passing game.
32.*Gus Edwards BAL at CIN
Note: Edwards was added to the injury report Friday with a back injury. ***Edwards is expected to play.***
33.Nyheim Hines IND vs. JAX
34.*Ty Johnson NYJ at NE
Note: Johnson to a secondary role to La'Mical Perine, even after Frank Gore got hurt. Last man standing with Perine going on the COVID-IR.
35.Mike Boone MIN at DET
36.AJ Dillon GB at CHI
37.*Leonard Fournette TB vs. ATL
Note: It's possible that Ronald Jones could return this week. Fournette (abdomen) was cleared from the injury list on Friday, but Jones will be active.
38.Tony Pollard DAL at NYG
39.*Darwin Thompson KC vs. LAC
Note: Thompson could be more involved this week if the Chiefs rest a bunch of their starters, but that also means he could be running behind a backup OL. ***Some suggestion that Thompson will get 'the bulk of the work' at RB this week, from Ian Rapoport at least.***
40.Rashaad Penny SEA at SF
41.Benny Snell PIT at CLE
42.*Ito Smith ATL at TB
Note: Smith (rib) was limited in all three practices this week but was still cleared from the injury list.
43.Devin Singletary BUF vs. MIA
44.Samaje Perine CIN vs. BAL
45.*Cam Akers LA vs. ARI
Note: Akers sat out last week with a high-ankle sprain, but there's a chance he could return this week. I'll move him up later in the week if/when he starts practicing. Upgraded to a limited practice, listed as questionable on Friday. ***Akers is expected to try to play.***
46.Adrian Peterson DET vs. MIN
47.Corey Clement PHI vs. WAS
48.Tevin Coleman SF vs. SEA
49.Todd Gurley ATL at TB
50.*Darrel Williams KC vs. LAC
Note: Williams out-touched Lev Bell in the win over the Falcons.
51.Salvon Ahmed MIA at BUF
52.Peyton Barber WAS at PHI
53.*James White NE vs. NYJ
Note: Even with the Pats playing catchup all night, White managed only four carries and three targets against the Bills.
54.Jerick McKinnon SF vs. SEA
55.*Tony Jones NO at CAR
Note: ***Jones was activated from the practice squad and will back up Ty Montgomery (and really, Taysom Hill) with Kamara and Murray out.***
56.Darrynton Evans TEN at HOU
57.J.J. Taylor NE vs. NYJ
58.Brian Hill ATL at TB
59.LeSean McCoy TB vs. ATL
60.Devontae Booker LV at DEN
61.Kerryon Johnson DET vs. MIN
62.Alfred Morris NYG vs. DAL
63.*Jamaal Williams GB at CHI
Note: (Quad) Sat out Sunday night's win, giving rise to AJ Dillon's huge day.
64.Jaylen Samuels PIT at CLE
65.Royce Freeman DEN vs. LV
66.Dion Lewis NYG vs. DAL
67.*Devine Ozigbo JAC at IND
Note: Only two touches in the loss to the Bears, despite the absence of James Robinson.
68.*Chase Edmonds ARZ at LAR
Note: Edmonds is day-to-day with a hip injury that forced him out in Saturday's loss to the Niners. Edmonds (hip) didn't practice Friday and is listed as questionable. ***The Cardinals are still optimistic that Edmonds will suit up, but I can't get behind starting him given the risk, especially with the late afternoon start time.***
69.*Mike Davis CAR vs. NO
Note: Davis had a hard time getting going against the Football Team, and the matchup doesn't get better this week against the Saints. No wonder Davis struggled last week - he was gutting through an ankle injury. He's doubtful for Week 17.
70.*Duke Johnson HOU vs. TEN
Note: Johnson (neck) has been limited in practice all week and is listed as questionable.
71.*Le'Veon Bell KC vs. LAC
Note: I thought that Bell would have a bigger role with CEH out. I was wrong. Bell (knee) managed just one limited practice Friday and is listed as questionable.
72.*Damien Harris NE vs. NYJ
Note: (Ankle) Sat out a second consecutive game Monday night. Ruled out again this week.
73.*Christian McCaffrey CAR vs. NO
Note: Coach Matt Rhule said that McCaffrey (thigh) is 'unlikely' to play in the season finale.
74.*Carlos Hyde SEA at SF
Note: Hyde sat out practice all three days this week with flu-like symptoms. He is listed as questionable.
75.*James Robinson JAC at IND
Note: The Jaguars will evaluate Robinson's ankle on Wednesday.
76.*Latavius Murray NO at CAR
Note: Big opportunity upcoming for Murray with Alvin Kamara sitting out due to a positive COVID-19 test. ***Not so fast - Murray has been deemed a high-risk close contact and has been ruled out this week, as has Dwayne Washington. The Saints are down to Ty Montgomery and Tony Jones coming up from the practice squad.
77.*Darrell Henderson LA vs. ARI
Note: Henderson suffered a high-ankle sprain and was placed on IR on Tuesday.
78.*Frank Gore NYJ at NE
Note: Gore has been ruled out for Week 17 with a lung contusion.
79.*Alvin Kamara NO at CAR
Note: Ruled out a positive COVID-19 test; he could be back for the Wild Card round game, though from what I read, that's only true if that game falls on Sunday the 10th.
80.*La'Mical Perine NYJ at NE
Note: Placed on the COVID-IR.
81.*Miles Sanders PHI vs. WAS
Note: Sanders was added to the injury report with a knee issue on Thursday and then ruled out Friday.
82.*Dalvin Cook MIN at DET
Note: Mike Boone's vulture touchdown was coal in the stocking for Cook's fantasy managers. Away from the team due to the death of his father, and won't play this week.

Note: Robinson (hamstring) only had one full practice this week, but he's been cleared from the injury list.
12.Robert Woods LA vs. ARI
13.*Corey Davis TEN at HOU
Note: Shut out in a game where the Titans were chasing points the entire night, just brutal.
14.*Jarvis Landry CLE vs. PIT
Note: Landry, Higgins and Peoples-Jones have all tested negative so far since landing on the COVID-IR for close contact with a teammate that tested positive. They can come off the IR as early as Thursday.
15.T.Y. Hilton IND vs. JAX

Note: Lazard (core/wrist) has been cleared from the injury list.
33.*DeVante Parker MIA at BUF

35.Marquise Brown BAL at CIN
36.Kendrick Bourne SF vs. SEA
37.*Tyler Boyd CIN vs. BAL
Note: Boyd (concussion) has been cleared from the injury list.
38.Lynn Bowden MIA at BUF
39.Jalen Reagor PHI vs. WAS
40.*Demarcus Robinson KC vs. LAC
Note: Robinson and Hardman should get more snaps/targets this week, but they'll be coming from Chad Henne and not Patrick Mahomes.
41.Chad Hansen HOU vs. TEN
42.*Stefon Diggs BUF vs. MIA
Note: ***The Bills are a risk to rest their starters if/once they establish a lead against Miami, or if the Steelers fall behind, with the Steelers benching many of their starters.***
43.JuJu Smith-Schuster PIT at CLE
44.*Josh Reynolds LA vs. ARI
Note: Reynolds had 10 targets in the loss to the Seahawks and could be in line for a big workload this week if Cooper Kupp can't return from the COVID-IR in time for this week.

81.*Terry McLaurin WAS at PHI

Note: Snead played only 12 snaps Sunday due to an ankle injury. Snead didn't practice all week, but is listed as questionable.

Note: I doubt that Hill plays, or at least plays significantly this week. Hill (hamstring) has officially been ruled out.

Note: Grant suffered a high-ankle sprain against the Raiders. Grant wasn't moving well during the media access portion of Friday's practice, but is listed as questionable.
86.*DJ Chark JAC at IND
Note: Chark (shin) has been ruled out for the season finale.
87.*Sammy Watkins KC vs. LAC
Note: Watkins suffered a calf injury against the Falcons and the Chiefs have nothing to play for this week - I'd be surprised if he plays. Officially ruled out.
88.*Julio Jones ATL at TB
Note: Jones (hamstring) has a chance to play this week - he won't be held out just because the Falcons are out of it. Officially ruled out for the season finale.

2.Mark Andrews BAL at CIN
3.George Kittle SF vs. SEA
4.Noah Fant DEN vs. LV
5.*Logan Thomas WAS at PHI

6.Rob Gronkowski TB vs. ATL
7.Dawson Knox BUF vs. MIA
8.*Irv Smith MIN at DET
Note: Once again, the Vikings won't have Kyle Rudolph, and the Lions secondary has been getting torched recently.
9.Robert Tonyan GB at CHI
10.*Zach Ertz PHI vs. WAS
Note: Ertz should get a high volume of targets with Dallas Goedert out. Richard Rodgers (ankle) is also out.
11.Jonnu Smith TEN at HOU
12.Mike Gesicki MIA at BUF
13.*Evan Engram NYG vs. DAL

Note: Doyle (quadriceps) was cleared from the injury list on Friday.
38.Jacob Hollister SEA at SF
39.Adam Trautman NO at CAR
40.*Travis Kelce KC vs. LAC
Note: Like Tyreek Hill, I'd be stunned if Kelce plays this week. Though he's not on the injury list, Kelce is likely to rest. The Chiefs have cited numerous 'nagging injuries' but they don't even have to have that as a reason. No surprises here.
41.*Hunter Henry LAC at KC
Note: Henry (COVID-IR) will also miss the season finale.
42.*Dallas Goedert PHI vs. WAS
Note: Goedert was forced to leave Sunday's loss to the Cowboys with a calf injury. Goedert has been ruled out.

Note: Gaskin looked phenomenal in his return, taking over the primary RB duties from Salvon Ahmed.
26.*Josh Jacobs LV at DEN
Note: Jacobs required an IV at one point during Saturday's game, limiting his output, and then got extremely unlucky in later goal line situations - getting stopped at the 1-yard line and then seeing Derek Carr get a QB sneak for the TD; seeing Devontae Booker not once but twice get carries on first-and-goal from the 5; and then of course at the end of the game, purposefully not scoring twice in order to kill more clock.
