Training Camp Notes: August 27

This article is part of our Training Camp Notes series.

A winner was named in the Saints QB battle, and Jameis Winston will be the Week 1 starter against the Packers. Aside from that, there's no clear indication if Winston will be on the field in all packages and situations, and fantasy GMs may have some level of concern that Taysom Hill is under center when the team gets into the red zone. Overall, this is great news for Winston, but there's no guarantee that the move is permanent.

With Taysom Hill starting the season as the backup QB for the Saints, he certainly could be on the field in many capacities at a number of positions, and it can't be ruled out that he could be a factor in the red-zone offense. However, with QB classification in most leagues, his fantasy value will be limited unless he's able to take over the job at some point during the season.

Even though Saquon Barkley (knee) won't play in the Giants' preseason finale, he'll dress and go through pregame warmups. This is a good sign for a player who took reps in both 7-on-7s and 11-on-11s at Thursday's practice. However, there's still no definitive word as to how he'll be used in the regular season, but at least this week's developments indicate he's moving in the right direction. Fantasy managers must weigh out the risk along with the upside when using a first- or second-round draft pick on him.

After being given a two-to-three week timetable after suffering a hamstring injury on August 3, Kenny Golladay will not suit up for the Giants' preseason finale against the Patriots. Due to all of the missed time, Golladay and Daniel Jones haven't gotten many reps in practice after becoming teammates in the offseason. Although it's possible that Golladay returns quickly to full health and settles in as the team's alpha receiver, it's also possible that he struggles to acclimate to his new team, making his fantasy value difficult to predict.

On August 25, Marvin Jones was diagnosed with a shoulder (AC joint) sprain, and he didn't practice Friday. However, he's expected to suit up for Week 1, even if he doesn't play in the preseason finale. Although the 31-year-old receiver is going outside the top-100 picks, his range of potential season outcomes seems vast. During his eight-year career, he's posted just a single 1,00-yard campaign, though he's scored nine TDs in three of the last four seasons, and he'll be going from Matthew Stafford to Trevor Lawrence at QB. Fortunately, his ADP bakes in risk for downside, so if Jones reaches the levels of production he had in Detroit, he could be a draft-day steal.

Apparently, there's little cause for concern with Brandon Aiyuk expected to miss this weekend's preseason game due to a hamstring injury, as coach Kyle Shanahan expects the receiver to be fine by next week. Those who are drafting in the next few days shouldn't need to move Aiyuk on draft boards.

Although Stephen Holder of The Athletic is reporting that Kylen Granson could be featured in the Colts' passing attack based on his usage in training camp, the rookie caught just two of seven targets over the first two preseason games. It's usually difficult for even the elite rookie tight ends to be strong fantasy options right away, but Granson, a fourth-round pick, is at least in an offense that likes to use their tight ends in the passing game, but aside from a endgame pick in fantasy drafts, there's no guarantee he sees regular targets.

For those who play in leagues with kickers, Joey Slye may need a solid showing in Friday's preseason game, as he tries to hold off Ryan Santoso to be the Panthers' kicker this season. If drafting this weekend, it may be wise to draft a kicker without competition unless clarity is provided in terms of Slye's role on the team.
