Montrell Johnson

Running BackRB
2023 Fantasy Outlook
Johnson came over from Louisiana with head coach Billy Napier, and the step up in competition did little to affect his impact in 2022. In fact, Johnson posted virtually identical numbers from his time as a member of the Ragin’ Cajuns, rushing for 841 yards while managing double-digit touchdowns for the second-consecutive season. Johnson showcased a nose for the goal line as well as the ability to break loose for big gainers, averaging a stellar 5.4 yards per tote. Johnson remains limited as a receiver, as he caught just 12 balls for 58 yards and a touchdown in his first season in Gainesville. The presence of Trevor Etienne will also continue to limit his upside, as Etienne himself rushed 118 times for 719 yards and six touchdowns last season. In addition, it remains to be seen how the departure of Anthony Richardson will play into the offensive scheme for the Gators. Richardson was a dangerous, dynamic dual-threat quarterback, while his replacement Graham Mertz will be largely a pocket passer, and one that has been inconsistent. As such, teams could try to load the box against Johnson and Etienne and force Mertz to prove he can beat opposing defenses with his arm. Read Past Outlooks
Returning to Florida
January 12, 2024
Johnson announced Friday that he will return to Florida for his senior season in 2024, Zach Abolverdi of On3.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was eligible for the 2024 NFL Draft after completing his third collegiate season in 2023, but he'll stick around in school for his final year of eligibility this upcoming fall. After arriving in Gainesville ahead of the 2022 season following a 2021 freshman campaign at Louisiana, Johnson split backfield duties with Trevor Etienne the last two seasons. Etienne transferred to Georgia earlier in the offseason, so Johnson should have the opportunity to act as the Gators' clear No. 1 option out of the backfield in 2024. As a junior, Johnson carried 152 times for 817 yards and five touchdowns while adding 30 catches for 236 yards and a score in 12 games.

2022 Fantasy Outlook
Johnson transferred from Louisiana and will be reunited with former coach Billy Napier. Johnson rushed for 838 yards and 12 touchdowns as a freshman with the Ragin’ Cajuns. He averaged 5.2 yards pe tote. Johnson’s main competition for carries out of the backfield will be Nay’Quan Wright, who received fairly limited work as the third-string rusher in 2021. Wright appears to be the better receiver of the two, though, as Wright snagged 14 passes for 178 yards and an additional touchdown out of the backfield. Meanwhile, Johnson caught just six passes for 53 yards last season. As such, Johnson could be used as the early-down and goal-line back, with the smaller Wright coming in as a change-of-pace or on passing downs.
