Graterol finally avoided the injured list in 2023, pitching a career-high 67.1 innings across 68 games. His age-24 season was the best of his career, as he recorded 4 wins, 7 saves and 19 holds for the Dodgers, alongside elite ratios. Graterol's 1.24 ERA was 2nd-best among qualified relievers, while his 63.8% groundball percentage was 4th. He didn't strike many batters out (18.7%), but he avoided hard contact thanks to a high-velocity sinker that he threw 43.6% of the time. Graterol was dominant in the second half, permitting only one run over 28.1 innings (0.32 ERA) after the All-Star break. He closed out the year on a 24-game scoreless streak that began in late-July. Graterol will have a chance to extend that streak in 2024 as one of the Dodgers' highest-leveraged relievers. Begins throwing progression
Manager Dave Roberts said that Graterol (shoulder) threw a "good" bullpen session Monday, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Graterol won't be available until around mid-May after the Dodgers initially placed him on the 15-day injured list March 19 before later transferring him to the 60-day IL, but the fact that the right-hander is already in the midst of a throwing progression suggests he should be ready to go around the time he's first eligible to return. He'll likely continue the ramp-up process with multiple bullpen sessions and live batting practice sessions over the next couple of weeks before perhaps heading out on a minor-league rehab assignment later this month or in early May.

Durability continues to be Graterol's biggest issue with two more trips to the injured list in 2022. First, a right shoulder injury sidelined him for over a month, followed by right elbow inflammation that forced Graterol to miss three more weeks in September. Despite the setbacks, the 24-year-old managed to log career-highs with 46 appearances and 49.2 innings. Graterol's strikeout (21.8%), walk (5.1%) and groundball (63.1%) rates improved and it looked like he was going to take over the Dodgers closer role before getting hurt. The right-hander added a cutter to his arsenal in 2021 and threw the pitch more last year, but his slider and 100-mph sinker continue to be his most effective weapons. Graterol has the upside of a dominant closer and figures to be in the mix for 2023 saves after tallying four last year. However, since we can't yet count on a full season from Graterol, try to temper your expectations.
