One thing I will never understand is the Angels’ handling of Brandon Wood, not only this year, but over the last couple years. Let’s recap Wood’s season to date:

4/5 – Hits .333 with 4 HR this spring, but is optioned to Triple-A after Erick Aybar bats .431.

4/21 – Wood is killing the ball in Triple-A and gets recalled with Vlad Guerrero hurt.

5/6 – Wood gets all of 10 plate appearances (3-for-9, BB) and gets sent to Triple-A.

The randomness of Nick Adenhart's death, and that of his friends, is eery in this minute-by-minute account of their last night. As the police officer who arrived on the scene said, "A half-second before or after and there's no impact. That's like taking one more brush of your hair."

And the mother of the drunk driver who killed the trio has the gall to say, "It was an accident. He never meant to hurt anybody, ever."

Nick Adenhart Killed

Truly awful news about Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart. The kid -- he was only 22 -- throws six scoreless innings Wednesday night only to be killed a few hours later in a hit-and-run accident by a guy barreling through a stoplight. Just terrible. Two others in Adenhart's car were killed and another is in critical condition. I imagine tonight's Angels-A's game will be canceled.

One thing that's bizarre about baseball is the unequal number of teams in each division. In the AL West, you have a 25 percent chance of making the playoffs, all other things being equal, while in the four five-team divisions you have a 20 percent chance, and in the NL Central you have a 16.7 percent chance.
