This essay offers advice on how to sift through the field at this week's PGA Championship at Hazeltine. Want to go beyond the just-pick-Tiger mindset? (Remember, he's winless in majors this season. If you bet on him at the Masters, the US Open, and the Open Championship, your wallet is a bit lighter right now.) With topics from course length to dealing with nerves, the essay explores who benefits and who might struggle.

If you're one of those golf traditionalists who take the "par is a good score" approach to tournaments, you should probably avert your eyes from coverage of the Buick Open. The field is clobbering par, and the eventual winning score might be something on the order of 23-under. (For comparison, Kenny Perry won last year's Buick with a score of 19-under.) The leader after Saturday's third round is none other than Tiger Woods, who followed up Friday's season-best 63 with a 65 Saturday to reach 17-under for the event. Second-round leader Michael Letzig led by a stroke going into his final hole, but had trouble getting out of a greenside bunker and finished with a double bogey to post a 68; he's one shot back of Woods, and will get to see the world's No. 1 player up close in the final pairing on Sunday.

If you are in a fantasy league where you can set your lineup daily (such as Yahoo!) be wary of players paired with Tiger Woods. According to this Wall Street Journal story, players play about a half to a full stroke worse when in his group.Golf Sleepers
We just completed our 13-team RotoWire staff golf auction. Here were my sleeper lists heading into the draft. It's a very deep league, so I'm giving you three levels of sleepers.Financial Doom & Fantasy Golf
In addition to trying to figuring out when Tiger Woods will come back from knee surgery in 2009, there may be another level of analysis we'll need to incorporate into forecasting 2009 fantasy golf. We may need to start watching "Mad Money" each night. Golf may be hit the hardest of any sport from the economic meltdown.
