Yahoo! Sports Underpaying for Perfect Bracket

It's too late now, but if you filled out your bracket with Yahoo!, you were eligible to win $1 million, provided you submitted a perfect bracket.

Upsets I Like, Upsets I Don't Like

The lack of mid-majors in this tournament makes the upsets less dramatic, but, nevertheless, here are some upsets I like. (I wanted to post this before the tournament tipped off, but hey, I got backed up, and these games haven't tipped off yet.)

Final Four Picks - SOUTH + Championship Pick

FINAL FOUR

1 Louisville over 2 Memphis: You won't find more talent in any game this whole tournament than this one. Memphis lost a little too much from last year's team to overcome the loaded Cards.
4 Gonzaga over 3 Villanova: The Zags are the only team in the nation to rank in the top-10 in both Offensive and Defensive Efficiency.

1 Louisville over 4 Gonzaga: Again, no answer for Terrence Williams, or Earl Clark for that matter. Shades of Kentucky over Utah, 1998, in this one.

Obama's East Coast Bias

President Obama filled out an NCAA Tournament bracket for ESPN, and it looks like he's no fan of the Pac-10. He picks seven upsets in the entire tournament (not counting the 8-9 matchups) and four of them involve Pac-10 teams losing.

NCAA Tournament Player Rankings

The online fantasy industry pretty much limits its NCAA Tournament offerings to bracket pick 'em games, but for those of you who draft players for the tournament with your pals, we present our annual tournament player rankings. Most fantasy news sites ignore college hoops altogether, and I haven't seen any that produce a tourney cheatsheet. We're here for you.

Final Four Picks - EAST

An all-Big East Elite 8 clash ends with a surprise victor.

Final Four Picks - WEST

The first early upset for a #1 seed happens here.

Final Four Picks - MIDWEST

Since we're less than 48 hours away from the start of the NCAA Tournament (the play-in game notwithstanding) and since Chris Liss has already hit me with his annual "I haven't watched any college hoops this year, give me all your picks" phone call, I figured I may as well go on record with my bracket.

March Madness Tips Off

A few quick observations on Selection Sunday:

-- This might have been the easiest tournament to seed in years. Sure, St. Mary's, San Diego State, Creighton and some others had arguments, but it is certainly no great crime that none of those made it. And when you factor in the handful of conference upsets that took away available bids, it's not surprising that some mid-majors missed out. All the teams whose bubbles burst had flaws.

Marching to Madness

The best sporting event of the year is almost here. Here's some early March Madness to get you going. Gotta love this kid. The VMI cadet, though, looks like he's soiling himself, which is not really what I want to see from a kid at a military institute.

NFL Notes
A look around the league regarding Week 10:
Week 10 Observations
  • We've beaten to death Bill Belichick's decision to go for it on 4th and 2 in Sunday night's game (the best take on it I've seen is here), but the real takeaway is how much Cris Collinsworth, Al Michaels, Tony Dungy and Rodney Harrison felt it was their duty to spout the conventional wisdom without even attempting to analyze Belichick's basis for the decision. Throw in Bob Costas, and it's appalling that five guys collectively making more than $10 million a year to interpret the sport for us didn't even consider the issue from a probability standpoint. Sadly, the NBC crew is probably the best one on TV. (Update: Jon Gruden just defended Belichick's call on MNF - good for him).
  • Dominant Offense but Shaky Defense...Barkley and Dirk
This topic is a spin-off from the Michael Jordan thread of last week.  In the excellent discussion on that thread a mini-debate broke out as to how Charles Barkley compares to Kevin Garnett.  The gist of the brief debate was to question whether Barkley was enough better than Garnett offensively to make them comparable in value as overall players despite Garnett’s huge defensive advantages.  The thing is, though, to me there is a much better comp for Barkley in this generation than Garnett:  Dirk Nowitzki.

    Jennings vs Rose
Last year Derrick Rose was the NBA Rookie of the Year.  One year later, would you take him over current rookie point guard phenom Brandon Jennings?
