2024 Fantasy Outlook
Paxton was limited to just six starts from 2020-22 due to mostly arm-related injuries, so the fact that he was able to take the ball 19 times in 2023 was a minor miracle. He had stretches where he was extremely effective, particularly during the first half when he managed a 2.73 ERA and 64:14 K:BB across 56 innings of work. Paxton stumbled to a 6.98 ERA after the All-Star break, though, and allowed 17 runs over his final three outings before being shut down in early September with a knee problem. Now 35, Paxton is among the poorest health bets in the game, but the left-hander still throws hard and has two effective secondary pitches in his curveball and cutter. He signed with the Dodgers on a one-year, $11 million deal in free agency, and that landing spot makes Paxton an attractive option to round out a fantasy pitching staff for as long as his body holds up. Limited workload Wednesday
Paxton came away with a no-decision in Wednesday's 10-3 win over the Mets, giving up two hits over three scoreless innings. He struck out three without walking a batter.
ANALYSIS
The veteran lefty was pitching on just four days rest, and per Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register, was told prior to the outing that his workload would be limited. Paxton wound up tossing exactly 50 pitches (29 strikes), as the Dodgers effectively went with a bullpen day and used six relievers after he left the mound. Paxton will take a 3.29 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 31:28 K:BB through 52 innings into his next outing -- when he should see a more usual workload in a road start against the Pirates.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Searching for cutter
Paxton has thrown his cutter just 42 times through nine starts this season and said Thursday he doesn't "really know where it is," per Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.
ANALYSIS
Despite sitting at 5.1 percent usage, the cutter is still Paxton's tertiary offering so far in 2024, as his four-seam fastball and knuckle curve amount to 88.9 percent of his pitches. The veteran left-hander threw the cutter at nearly a 20-percent clip in 2019, but he's been unable to rediscover the pitch following a few injury-plagued campaigns. Paxton has prevented runs well this season with a 3.49 ERA across 49 innings despite the two-pitch mix, but a 1.43 WHIP and 28:28 K:BB indicate there could be trouble on the horizon if he's unable to get the cutter back on track.

Paxton spent most of 2022 rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, and he suffered a lat strain in August after just one minor-league rehab outing. The left-hander has thrown just 21.2 innings across the past three seasons, but he'll be back with the Red Sox for 2023 after he exercised his $4 million player option. He's likely to have some serious workload restrictions given his limited action over the last few years. Paxton pitched well for the Yankees back in 2019 with a 3.82 ERA across 150.2 innings, but it's unclear if he'll be able to rediscover that form while entering his age-34 season.
