World Series Game 4 Live Blog

Interesting that the Yankees are going with their stud on three days rest, the Phillies are not. What do you think of the respective decisions on CC Sabathia and Cliff Lee?

Do you think that the NFL/NBC don't have a Sunday night game tonight out of professional courtesy, or do their ratings really suffer head-to-head against the World Series?

This is so redundant but McCarver is a moron. After saying "there's no way that was intentional hitting ARod" did he ever think that sets up the double play with Posada coming up? My wife also said she thinks it was him who said it was October.

If the Yankees get out to a big lead, I expect a Philly hitter will get plunked.

Am I wrong in thinking both teams are playing this the wrong way? The Phillies being down should gamble with Lee on short rest, while the Yanks with the advantage could give CC proper rest.

Kevin, that's exactly what I was thinking, but Sabathia at least has some history of pitching on three days' rest. That, and do you really want to see Chad Gaudin starting a World Series game against this lineup?

With the way they're handling the rotations it seems the Yankees are going for the throat and just want to get it over with, while the Phillies appear to be going the conservative route and playing for a full 7 if it comes to that.

The Phillies' other problem is that what do they do with Cole Hamels? Even if they get it to a Game 7, can they start him with confidence? That's the problem that they bring about by not starting Lee tonight.

History on 3-games rest isn't good. But it has been for CC. I'm fine with how both teams are playing it tonight.

Given how Manuel stuck with Lidge during the regular season presumably based off of his previous body of work, I don't think he sees a problem in spite of what happened last night in handing the ball to Hamels in a game 7 if it happens. He's proven he'll stick by his pitchers even when all evidence suggests otherwise.

Melky Cabrera, you don't get only one pitch, you can see a few more.

Sabathia pitched against the Phillies in his last outing of last year on three days rest and got shelled.
Jeff-I'd like to have seen Joba go. He's a risk, but now you're stuck with Burnett on three days rest also.

Obviously it's because I grew up a Mets fan, but I still like McCarver. Who would you rather have calling the game, Rick Sutcliffe?

Why can't I see Joe Buck listening to Pearl Jam?

Announcers I like - it's a pretty short list, and I'm probably forgetting a few. Feel free to chime in with your choices:

1. Vin Scully
2. Boog Sciambi (especially with his ATL partner - name escaping me, but he did some of the color for TBS in the playoffs)
3. Josh Lewin (especially with Tom House)

Maybe it's because I'm a Cubs fan that grew up in the 90s, but I'd love to see them take Mark Grace from the pregame show and put him in the booth. And I'll let my bias show even further by saying that I think Pat Hughes (Cubs radio) is one of the best play-by-play guys in the business, and that Steve Stone is hands down the best color guy out there. I also like Josh Lewin and Dan Shulman, and of course Vin Scully.

Yes on both Steve Stone and Shulman - I like their style quite a bit. Also like John Rooney (former Sox, now with the Cards radio team).

On the other hand, no no no no no no on Grace. He makes my ears bleed.

Damon has a great at-bat, singles, steals second and smartly takes third. Love to see a wild pitch and a run.

nasty pitch to strike out Jeter, btw.

knowing that the run on 3rd base (Damon) scoring likely beats you anyhow, any consideration in issuing the IBB to A-Rod there in the 9th to load the bases? Granted, Posado did double, but would rather face Posado than A-Rod operating under the asusmption that the run you move into scoring position by walking ARod is largely irrelevant.

Last year Sabathia got shelled by the Phillies on three days rest, but he had been on three days rest for several starts in a row just to get Milwaukee into the playoffs. He's had a lot more time off this year.

Burnett's history on three days is pretty good too. I worry about Pettitte, but I'm hoping it doesn't get that far.

It's not a terrible idea; the only problem though is that Lidge, who had just hit a batter and went to a three-ball count to Damon, would have nowhere to put Posada with a walk. Much emphasis was being placed that Lidge didn't throw his slider because Damon was on third - is that really true, or just supposition? If so, that's a huge FAIL on the part of Ruiz. You have to go to your bread-and-butter pitch and have confidence that your catcher will block it.

Cannot stand McCarver -- and continue to be mystified that so many TV critic types seem to think he's good.

I'll give McCarver an ounce of credit, he picked up right away that Howard missed home.

NFL Notes
A look around the league regarding Week 10:
Week 10 Observations
  • We've beaten to death Bill Belichick's decision to go for it on 4th and 2 in Sunday night's game (the best take on it I've seen is here), but the real takeaway is how much Cris Collinsworth, Al Michaels, Tony Dungy and Rodney Harrison felt it was their duty to spout the conventional wisdom without even attempting to analyze Belichick's basis for the decision. Throw in Bob Costas, and it's appalling that five guys collectively making more than $10 million a year to interpret the sport for us didn't even consider the issue from a probability standpoint. Sadly, the NBC crew is probably the best one on TV. (Update: Jon Gruden just defended Belichick's call on MNF - good for him).
  • Dominant Offense but Shaky Defense...Barkley and Dirk
This topic is a spin-off from the Michael Jordan thread of last week.  In the excellent discussion on that thread a mini-debate broke out as to how Charles Barkley compares to Kevin Garnett.  The gist of the brief debate was to question whether Barkley was enough better than Garnett offensively to make them comparable in value as overall players despite Garnett’s huge defensive advantages.  The thing is, though, to me there is a much better comp for Barkley in this generation than Garnett:  Dirk Nowitzki.

    Jennings vs Rose
Last year Derrick Rose was the NBA Rookie of the Year.  One year later, would you take him over current rookie point guard phenom Brandon Jennings?
