Welcome to the Group of Death

The World Cup draw has finally been completed and the United States finds itself in a group with Germany, Ghana and Portugal. The early reaction is that it's the Group of Death and reviewing the other groups pretty much confirms it. Group B isn't exactly a cakewalk, with Spain, Netherlands, Chile, and Australia, while Group D is also tough with Uruguay, England, Italy and Costa Rica. Had the United States been drawn into any of these groups, we'd surely be calling that one the Group of Death.
Here's the full breakdown:

Group A
1. Brazil
2. Croatia
3. Mexico
4. Cameroon

Group B
1. Spain
2. Netherlands
3. Chile
4. Australia

Group C
1. Colombia
2. Greece
3. Cote d'Ivoire
4. Japan

Group D
1. Uruguay
2. Costa Rica
3. England
4. Italy

Group E
1. Switzerland
2. Ecuador
3. France
4. Honduras

Group F
1. Argentina
2. Bosnia-Hertzegovina
3. Iran
4. Nigeria

Group G
1. Germany
2. Portugal
3. Ghana
4. United States

Group H
1. Belgium
2. Algeria
3. Russia
4. South Korea

Sports Illustrated's Grant Wahl noted that the U.S. has the longest travel possible for any team in the World Cup at 8,866 miles. It's certainly not an ideal situation for the Americans.

That being said, if Jurgen can get us out of the group stage, it wouldn't be the biggest surprise in World Cup history. Ghana and Portugal are beatable and a draw with Germany should be enough to get us through.

My picks for each group:
Group A: Brazil, Croatia
Group B: Spain, Netherlands
Group C: Colombia, Cote d'Ivoire
Group D: Uruguay, Italy
Group E: France, Ecuador
Group F: Argentina, Bosnia-Hertzegovina
Group G: Germany, United States
Group H: Belgium, Russia

Now we just have to wait seven months to see what happens.

I find it laughable how no one is giving the USA a shot, I've even read respected journalists say "I don't see how the US gets a point." If anyone should be upset, it's Ghana; they really don't have a chance. Portugal is overrated (although Ronaldo vs. our defense isn't good) and while it wasn't a full team, we beat Germany over the summer. The US with this mostly this squad over the last four years has beaten Italy, Spain, Venezuela, Mexico (multiple times) and Sweden. Tied England and Argentina. Played Brazil tough.

I couldn't agree with you more. Group B with Spain, Netherlands, and Chile would have been much tougher, or even Group D with Uruguay, Italy and England.

Do Analytics Take the Fun Out of Sports?
Apparently that was the topic of one of the presentations at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston last week. The presenter, Yale's Edward Tufte, opined:

Don't let people tell you analytics are reductionist and take the joy out of sports. They mostly just take the stupidity out of sports.

Is he right?

RotoWire's AL LABR Squad
The 2014 AL LABR auction went down at the Arizona Republic offices in downtown Phoenix Saturday night. It's a 12-team, 5 x 5, AL-only league with 2 C, 1 1B, 1 2B. 1 3B, 1 SS, 1 CI, 1 MI, 5 OF, 1 U and 9 pitchers. Everyone has $260 to spend.
The Problem With Drafting Billy Hamilton
Billy Hamilton went for $28 in the NL LABR auction this past weekend. I discussed this with a fellow writer who participates in Tout Wars with me later this month and we discussed the problem with investing heavily into Hamilton.

My 12-Team NFBC RotoWire Online Championship Team
I drafted out of the 11-hole for the "Beat Chris Liss" league. I had done a fair amount of research on optimal roster construction from that slot, and I decided I'd go hitter in the first round, three pitchers in 2-4 and then hitting for the next 10 rounds or so before filling in with upside pitchers late. Of course, few battle plans survive the actual war. Here are the results:
