Weekend Wire: Injuries and Opportunities

Kevin Garnett's injury is being described as a calf strain, and he's expected to miss the next two weeks, which has Celtics Nation breathing a collective sigh of relief. But fantasy players take note -- the C's have taken a decidedly Belichickian approach to disclosing the type and severity of injuries in the past; don't be surprised if that two weeks turns into more.

Either way, Glen Davis (61% owned) is a must-add in nearly any format. Players in deeper leagues might want to consider Jermaine O'Neal (18%) as well.

In Portland, the news about Brandon Roy's status seems excessively grim. There's a pretty good chance Roy will be shut down for the remainder of this season. Roy has been struggling with knee problems for much of this season, which is one reason why there's already been a run on Wes Matthews (78% owned). You might also want to take a look at Rudy Fernandez (15%), who will get more run if Roy is out of the mix.

It appears that Tyreke Evans is going to play with plantar fasciitis for as long as he can. But Evans owners would be well-advised to "handcuff" Francisco Garcia (26% owned) to Evans, because that injury won't go away without an extended period of rest.

Brad Miller (26% owned) and Jordan Hill (3%) should get some additional minutes while Chuck Hayes out for the next two-to-four weeks.

La-La-La-L.A. Gets Lord Stanley!
Just a few things that caught my eye:
  • Alec Martinez's Cup-winning goal celebration? # priceless. I wonder if he'll ever get his gloves back.
  • Henrik Lundqvist stopped the 50th shot of the game. He couldn't stop the 51st. #connsmythe if the Rangers had found a way to come back in this series.
Do Analytics Take the Fun Out of Sports?
Apparently that was the topic of one of the presentations at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston last week. The presenter, Yale's Edward Tufte, opined:

Don't let people tell you analytics are reductionist and take the joy out of sports. They mostly just take the stupidity out of sports.

Is he right?
