Week 6 NFL Live Blog

This is when the bye weeks are starting to take their toll, and as Scott Pianowski pointed out on his Yahoo blog, next week is even uglier.

The RotoWire Steak League has 16 teams and we start three receivers, and I've got bye week (Marques Colston, Brandon LaFell) and injury (Pierre Garcon) issues. So I've had to resort to starting, gulp, Chris Givens, Josh Gordon and Ramses Barden. Yes, my receivers suck to begin with - that's part of the problem.

But point being, it's pretty ugly out there right now.

Rivers & Bradshaw for me.

7-to-4 split on the early/late games. That's reasonable.

Kevin Harlan on the Bengals broadcast today. I'm looking forward to a steady stream of: "The Bengals have scored 3 unanswered points."

Two carries for Vick Ballard on the Colts first possession, got nine yards, but then had to punt. I'm curious to see how/if they use him on third down.

Raiders don't attempt a 57 yard FG in a dome? #fail

Announcer just said he saw Sebastian Janikowski nailing 65 yard FG's before the game. Raiders punt from Falcons 40 yard line, touchback.

So far both the Bucs and the Chiefs have red zone turnovers. Quinn's INT was a tipped ball, but he didn't throw a great pass to begin with.

By: jnowak2799
On: 10/14/2012 10:31:00 AM
So now Janikowski nails a 52 yard FG easily, why no 57 yard attempt?

Stafford 2 passes aimed for Tony Sheffler inside opponents 20 yard line, Calvin Johnson must be covered?

The Browns, with all their attrition at WR, are turning a lot to a guy they just activated from the practice squad, Josh Cooper.

Crappy WR Update: Givens - 85 yards. Gordon - 71 yards and a TD. Barden's game hasn't started yet, obviously.

Not for nothing, but the Cowboys are really running it down the Ravens' throats. Murray - 10-for-81, Felix Jones 3-for-30.

Joe Flacco just sliced and diced the Dallas secondary down the field. Six consecutive completions, finishing with a 19-yard TD to Torrey Smith. It all took about a minute.

DeMarco Murray sprained his right foot. He's still playing, but Felix Jones is now getting a lot of work. Murray was having a good day, too - 93 yards on 14 rushes.

Good no call on the Dallas two-point conversion. Just a flat-out drop by Dez Bryant. Speaking of Bryant, he has 12 catches today ... but just 94 yards. You have to at least triple digits if you have 12 receptions.

Nice of Aaron Hernandez to remind us that when the Patriots say things like "limited" and "questionable," there's not much meaning to it.

Bad defensive call by Seattle on the NE touchdown. Safeties playing corner on that particular goal-line defense. But Seattle's claim to fame is huge corners. So why, ever, put 5-10 Juron Johnson on Gronkowski at the goal line?

In fairness, the Seahawks forced a quick 3-and-out, with two incompletions. So it didn't work out too badly for them.

If you can't trust Rian Lindell to try a 52-yard game-winner, at altitude no less, why the hell is he on the roster?

The rest of the world finally figured out two long-overdue realities:

- Baltimore's defense isn't very good
- Houston's offensive line is *grossly* overrated (look at those PFF ranks again)

Do Analytics Take the Fun Out of Sports?
Apparently that was the topic of one of the presentations at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston last week. The presenter, Yale's Edward Tufte, opined:

Don't let people tell you analytics are reductionist and take the joy out of sports. They mostly just take the stupidity out of sports.

Is he right?

RotoWire's AL LABR Squad
The 2014 AL LABR auction went down at the Arizona Republic offices in downtown Phoenix Saturday night. It's a 12-team, 5 x 5, AL-only league with 2 C, 1 1B, 1 2B. 1 3B, 1 SS, 1 CI, 1 MI, 5 OF, 1 U and 9 pitchers. Everyone has $260 to spend.
The Problem With Drafting Billy Hamilton
Billy Hamilton went for $28 in the NL LABR auction this past weekend. I discussed this with a fellow writer who participates in Tout Wars with me later this month and we discussed the problem with investing heavily into Hamilton.

My 12-Team NFBC RotoWire Online Championship Team
I drafted out of the 11-hole for the "Beat Chris Liss" league. I had done a fair amount of research on optimal roster construction from that slot, and I decided I'd go hitter in the first round, three pitchers in 2-4 and then hitting for the next 10 rounds or so before filling in with upside pitchers late. Of course, few battle plans survive the actual war. Here are the results:
