This was the deepest mock draft I'd been apart of so far this year. I believe many of my picks, and the overall construction of my team, can be blamed on a lack of preparation. However, noting the mistakes I feel were made in this draft (a mock) will put me in a much better position in the future, which is the try purpose of this tool. -

Some things I should have already known were revealed to be glaringly true:

3B is thinnnnnnnnnnnnnn
2B is relatively deep as all get out compared to past seasons
Steals - They're rare, but don't get caught over valuing them and get too narrow of vision on prospective picks
1B - is deep, but don't wait until the 19th round and end up getting stuck with daniel murphy as your primary
Rankings - make sure you know where all of your targets are ranked, so you don't end up overlooking a player you wished you would of picked, but who was buried deeper in the rankings than you had time to peruse in the few minutes before the draft begins.
Pros - Don't draft with Jeff Erickson, DVR, and the rest of the rotowire community. Find shills to play with.

Kyle, your concerns about position scarcity were accentuated by taking OF with your first pick and three of your first eight. Not that any of the guys you took there were bad picks, but I'm a firm believer that it's better to take infielders early, as often, particularly in a deeper league like this, infield spots are harder to fill later.

Kemp, for example, is a fine player, but the next 6 guys off the board were all infielders, and I'd have taken any of them before Kemp. That ensures you fill a harder-to-fill position early, leaving you more options later. For example, if you took Longoria instead of Kemp, you wouldn't have had to reach for McGehee in Round 13 and could have taken an OF like Garrett Jones or Dexter Fowler. And I don't think many would argue that Longoria plus Jones/Fowler is better than Kemp plus McGahee.

I drafted in the 8 hole (Smitty) and took Longoria first due to the scarcity at 3b and the fact that maybe that is where he belongs. On the swing I wanted Upton but he went just before so I grabbed Sizemore. Lincecum lasted until 24 (haven't seen that lately) with Halladay the first SP off the board at 21. My strategy worked perfect from the 8 hole; Lock up some scarcity early, get 2 stud SP's and one of the top 5 RP's before round 8, and worry about outfielders and speed later. Getting Loney in round 11 helped my BA which is in question.
I went for my second catcher early and plan to do that when I draft NFBC. The thinking is that getting a good backstop with faab is a lot harder than getting other good positions with faab.
I think everyone had Matusz in the queue when he was plucked by DVR at the beginning of the 19th.
If Chris Davis and JJ Hardy come back at all this team would rock. Something I noticed, Gerraro Parra fell to me in the 22nd round, isn't he slated for better numbers than say Franklin Gutierrez who went in the 17th?
Really serviceable starting pitching can be found late.
Other things to note about this draft: Nobody believes in Brandon Webb, Jason Heyward in the 10th round, Alcides Escobar in the 21st, and if you wait until late for a second catcher you could be considering Laird or Towles...
It was fun,
Evol

I just noticed you took Peralta in Round 15. So you had to use TWO mid-round picks to make up for not having a 3B earlier. That spot could have been used for Sheets, who went two picks later.

So instead of Longoria, Fowler, and Sheets, you have Kemp, McGehee, and Peralta.

I'm not trying to criticize - at least you had the balls to draft - but this makes a compelling argument, I think, for Longoria earlier in a league like this.

I timed out and the computer auto selected Joe Nathan for me. Other than Pablo going my pick, that was the only eventful situation for me. A walk in the park for MDS. Erickson set us up saying Willingham will be out 6 weeks and then drafted him!!! Dirty lol. If this were a real league, Id trade Brett Myers to DVR for Brett Anderson.

Smitty - Parra might not even start, with Conor Jackson back (Chris Young, Justin Upton). I'm still not ready to write off Chris Young, but I seem to be in the minority on that one. Even if Parra gets the job, I'm sort of underwhelmed by him.

I would definitely give you two more players with Anderson for Myers.

the only problem with brett, you have to keep him under control. hes not afraid to slap you in public. could create a clubhouse problem, might even lose the respect from your other players... he comes with baggage.

Took the 10th pick (no man's land imo) because that is where I am drafting in my home league and I wanted to see how my strategy would hold up against the experts. Should have probably took a couple of closers in 12(Wells) and 15(Harden) instead of punting saves. Tried to draft high average and youth. Callaspo (16th) may be a reach, but the chance that he sees time at 3rd makes him attractive to me. Lacking speed and saves, but I would be happy to manage this team. Thanks guys. Enjoyed participating.

Although Spring training numbers do not mean a whole bunch, I have to agree with Erickson about Conor Jackson vs Parra. I believe Jackson has something to prove and will win the LF spot.

Also, if anybody cares to help, are there any glaring mistakes in the way I drafted? Discuss :-)

Erickson, i soooo want to do a mock with you and some of the boys just once. is that a possibility, or are your mocks strictly for employees and close friends?

I see that at least Mauer was drafted this time. In the current Rotowire guide for 2010 on page #25 a draft was held and no one took Mauer! What happened???

Do Analytics Take the Fun Out of Sports?
Apparently that was the topic of one of the presentations at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston last week. The presenter, Yale's Edward Tufte, opined:

Don't let people tell you analytics are reductionist and take the joy out of sports. They mostly just take the stupidity out of sports.

Is he right?

RotoWire's AL LABR Squad
The 2014 AL LABR auction went down at the Arizona Republic offices in downtown Phoenix Saturday night. It's a 12-team, 5 x 5, AL-only league with 2 C, 1 1B, 1 2B. 1 3B, 1 SS, 1 CI, 1 MI, 5 OF, 1 U and 9 pitchers. Everyone has $260 to spend.
The Problem With Drafting Billy Hamilton
Billy Hamilton went for $28 in the NL LABR auction this past weekend. I discussed this with a fellow writer who participates in Tout Wars with me later this month and we discussed the problem with investing heavily into Hamilton.

My 12-Team NFBC RotoWire Online Championship Team
I drafted out of the 11-hole for the "Beat Chris Liss" league. I had done a fair amount of research on optimal roster construction from that slot, and I decided I'd go hitter in the first round, three pitchers in 2-4 and then hitting for the next 10 rounds or so before filling in with upside pitchers late. Of course, few battle plans survive the actual war. Here are the results:
