Interesting Spring Performances, Part One: The NL
As spring training ambles nonchalantly towards the finish line, it's always fun to take a look at spring stats to see who really jumps off the page and might be making some kind of statement or other...
My AL Tout Wars team
We did the AL Tout Wars draft Saturday morning, once again in "The Bubble" at the Sirius/XM studios. It was a different Tout experience than my usual drafts at Tout - lately I haven't paid for closers there, or spent much on my outfielders. But I'm also one to take the values where they fall. So to that end, here's my squad:
My NFBC Recap
I have never been one to hold up to peer pressure well. Since Peter, Jeff, and Chris did a NFBC challenge, I had to join the cool kids and do one too.

My "Beat Peter Schoenke" Draft Results. My entry in the RotoWire Fantasy Baseball Online Championship was Monday night. Here's my quick take on the draft - this is a 12-team mixed league, 5x5 categories, 30 rosters spots (23 active), with no trades in the league. It has a top prize of $50,000 and a league prize of $1,400. |

Some things I should have already known were revealed to be glaringly true:
3B is thinnnnnnnnnnnnnn
2B is relatively deep as all get out compared to past seasons
Steals - They're rare, but don't get caught over valuing them and get too narrow of vision on prospective picks
1B - is deep, but don't wait until the 19th round and end up getting stuck with daniel murphy as your primary
Rankings - make sure you know where all of your targets are ranked, so you don't end up overlooking a player you wished you would of picked, but who was buried deeper in the rankings than you had time to peruse in the few minutes before the draft begins.
Pros - Don't draft with Jeff Erickson, DVR, and the rest of the rotowire community. Find shills to play with.

Kemp, for example, is a fine player, but the next 6 guys off the board were all infielders, and I'd have taken any of them before Kemp. That ensures you fill a harder-to-fill position early, leaving you more options later. For example, if you took Longoria instead of Kemp, you wouldn't have had to reach for McGehee in Round 13 and could have taken an OF like Garrett Jones or Dexter Fowler. And I don't think many would argue that Longoria plus Jones/Fowler is better than Kemp plus McGahee.

I went for my second catcher early and plan to do that when I draft NFBC. The thinking is that getting a good backstop with faab is a lot harder than getting other good positions with faab.
I think everyone had Matusz in the queue when he was plucked by DVR at the beginning of the 19th.
If Chris Davis and JJ Hardy come back at all this team would rock. Something I noticed, Gerraro Parra fell to me in the 22nd round, isn't he slated for better numbers than say Franklin Gutierrez who went in the 17th?
Really serviceable starting pitching can be found late.
Other things to note about this draft: Nobody believes in Brandon Webb, Jason Heyward in the 10th round, Alcides Escobar in the 21st, and if you wait until late for a second catcher you could be considering Laird or Towles...
It was fun,

So instead of Longoria, Fowler, and Sheets, you have Kemp, McGehee, and Peralta.
I'm not trying to criticize - at least you had the balls to draft - but this makes a compelling argument, I think, for Longoria earlier in a league like this.

Also, if anybody cares to help, are there any glaring mistakes in the way I drafted? Discuss :-)
