Trade Deadline Live Blog

After a very busy Saturday, we still have four hours until this year's non-waiver trade deadline expires. We've already seen Michael Bourn go to the Braves this morning, and the Rafael Furcal trade to St. Louis become official.

Who's next? What are your thoughts on the trades so far? Share your thoughts here.

Events I'm still waiting for:

- Ubaldo Jimenez has to pass his physical to make the trade to the Indians official.
- Will Rich Harden ultimately get dealt to the Red Sox, or is that deal officially dead?
- Where will Heath Bell end up?
- Will B.J. Upton get dealt?
- Will the Pirates get an outfielder to go along with their acquisition of Derrek Lee?
- Will the Reds trade for anyone?
- Will the Cubs trade anyone, anyone at all, away, or are the likes of Jeff Baker and Reed Johnson just too viable for their 2012 chances?

I don't mind what the Astros did with Bourn - I think there are some that vastly overrate him. He wasn't ever going to fetch one of the Braves' top pitching prospects, so I don't mind them getting the collection of guys that they did. Schafer is a post-hype guy, maybe with full playing time he can still blossom. Oberholtzer has a chance to be something decent, and Abreu at least misses bats as a reliever.

MLB Network just reported that Wandy Rodriguez could be going to the Yankees. I'm not sure I like that concept - though at least he's left-handed, which could possibly neutralize that short porch in right field a little bit.

Very interested to see what the closer situations for teams across the league looks like following the deadline.

Any thoughts on what the Padres are asking for from Philly for Bell or Adams? Either would be a key piece for the phils run to the title this year, but at what cost?

Steal for the Braves. A leadoff man with a .363 OBP and who can play CF (albeit not as well this year per UZR/150) and they give up none of the big four pitching prospects. That said, a guy with Bourn's skillset was never going to net the likes of Teheran, but I figured at least a guy like Randall Delgado would be involved.

I hear Bedard may still move, with the Cardinals interested. His start yesterday was a disaster, but he's never really been a bad pitcher whenever he's on the mound. As a Brewer fan, I'd prefer he stays away from St. Louis.

VP - Haven't heard what the Padres have asked for Bell from the Phils - but given that they just traded Singleton and Cosart, what else is in their system that is that appealing? It's not as if they'll get Dom Brown for him, right?

Ed Wade is a bum. He is like the dumb guy in your baseball league that you are dying to trade with but fear others trading with him first because he doesn't know what the hell he is doing. I am sure everyone can relate to that! Houston ownership must be a bunch of knuckleheads to hire Wade in the first place. I am glad they are in the Brewers division though. Wade is the Matt Millen of Baseball. War Wade!!! :)

Really expect the Yankees to jump in big at some point this afternoon. Bedard is a very good risk to take and with both Kuroda and Ubaldo now off the board, BOS or NYA should really be zeroing in on him.

Will the DBax go after Bedard, Guthrie or Wandy?

By: bogfella
On: 7/31/2011 9:44:00 AM
Oh, and Bourn was clearly the "steal" of the deadline deals so far. Why the Nats didn't target him instead of Span is a /boggle (other than the financial implications of course - those rule baseball these days).

By: Dave Regan
On: 7/31/2011 9:52:00 AM
VP - Who would the Dbax boot out of the rotation if they acquired another SP - Saunders and Collmenter haven't been that bad...

As for Bell in Philly, they could probably build a deal around Trevor May and Julio Rodriguez pretty easily if they didn't mind further gutting their farm system.

By: bogfella
On: 7/31/2011 9:56:00 AM
Dave - Collmenter is really a much better option in the pen and they have already said either he or Owings were headed that way, so both moving out of the rotation would not be a surprise.

By: Erickson
On: 7/31/2011 9:56:00 AM
That's a good point about May, Dave. Still might happen. It's funny seeing that the reliever market shrunk so quickly. Haven't heard a thing about Leo Nunez in the last few days.

By: bogfella
On: 7/31/2011 9:59:00 AM
Erickson - Marlins have now been saying they are unlikely to deal Nunez preferring to keep him around for the opening of the new park. Not sure why, but that's the word lol

It's not as if Goldschmidt has been lingering in the system forever - he hasn't even played in Triple-A yet. I'm not so sure that he's ready. He'll probably get the call, but this isn't Desmond Jennings or anything.

How do the buccos not go after Rafael Furcal at such a cheap price.... SS is their weakest position and Furcal could have been a nice upgrade

By: Erickson
On: 7/31/2011 10:35:00 AM
billgoof: Furcal would have had to approve the deal. Plus the Pirates were probably afraid that Furcal would hurt himself boarding the plane.

I am surprised that zona doesn't trade for D. Lee. Being in the pennant race I am not sure you want to gamble on a rookie 1b mid season. Also surprised I haven't heard any Carlos Lee rumors. I suppose he can clear waivers but still....

By: bogfella
On: 7/31/2011 10:37:00 AM
Goldschmidt could probably use more seasoning, but Miranda and Nady aren't the answer and apparently they thought Allen was expendable, so they might as well play this hand and see how Goldschmidt holds up, yes?

Good point on the approval of the trade - I'm just surprised we never even heard whispers that the pirates were intrigued.

Texas will fold in September if we can get Heath Bell to sure up the 8th... last season solid bullpen numbers were due to a confidence from their winning ways. Now that they're expected to win, they must have stronger more proven arms...

What will be interestsing, to see how Cleveland reacts to the deals in a tight AL Central

Love hearing talk that Derrek Lee's veteran leadership will be the key for the Bucs. Wasn't Overbay a veteran? Is this like "The Fugitive"?

Chicago detective: "He murdered her for the money."
Tommy Lee Jones' character: "But he's a doctor, isn't he already rich?"
detective: "Yeah, but she's more rich."

By: Zenguerrilla
On: 7/31/2011 11:03:00 AM
Comparing Overbay to Lee? Really? Pffffttt At least Lee has been "the man" before and he can play great defense? no? Still, it is stupid talk saying he is the end all by any means. I haven't heard that but.....Don't the Bucs need starting pitching? Not sure their staff can hold up...clock has to strike midnight? Bucos need a decent SP imho....

On: 7/31/2011 11:09:00 AM
Billy Beane is past his prime apparently. He doesn't want to trade some veteran players because he doesn't want to lose 100 games? WTF!!!! I can't believe I just heard that! Put your ego aside and suck it up and rebuild your team. Those mediocre vets aren't going to help the A's long term anyways...pffftt HORRIBLE!

That veteran....singular. You seen the report on mlb network too so I ain't going to argue with you. Beane hasn't done a good job the last few years...if you think so...well. :) If SD gets Profar I might take them off my one of the worst managements list. I expect fail as usual.

I dont like this trade for Adams, think we gave up a bit much for a mid-relief guy... though its probably better to pick up Adams then Bell who wouldve just went back to SD anyways...

So the question is, will Beaney boy pull the trigger on Bell now... or will it be the Angels...

How does Tex bullpen shake out now? As an Adams owner, can I drop him (holds don't matter)?

By: Zenguerrilla
On: 7/31/2011 11:59:00 AM
I think I would of ponied up and bought Bell. Feliz in the playoffs could be their weak link. He seems to lose it at times...it's a big gamble taking the cheap route. Still might work...just sayin? Sounds like Bell is about to go somewhere real soon? Philly have enough?

By: Brian Rutherford
On: 7/31/2011 12:11:00 PM
Hmm... Uehara 7th inning, Adams becomes 8th inning @obzen, the only way i see Adams taking over Feliz's job is if Neftali stumbles several times in a week. Honestly, as suspect as he's been, he's got the mental make up. The Minnesota Blown Save was a bit scary the other night, but he had pitched the previous night. Best case scenario I see Adams grabbing 5-7 saves over the stretch as Wash tries to keep Feliz fresh for the playoffs... Ew... Bell to Philly or Anaheim is ugly times for the Rangers either way...

By: Erickson
On: 7/31/2011 12:21:00 PM
I think that Feliz is on a very thin leash. It's not just this one blown save against the Twins - K's are way down, BB's are way up for him. Hold on to Adams.

By: Brian Rutherford
On: 7/31/2011 12:24:00 PM
call me a homer Jeffe, but with a stronger bullpen in front of him, I think you're gonna see a much more relaxed Feliz. Let's not forget, at 23 years old, he's already experienced so much. He is going to level out.

By: Kevin Payne
On: 7/31/2011 12:30:00 PM
Some interesting stuff re: Adams/Feliz. Adams was better at Petco this year than away (not by much) but had a 1.39 away ERA and 2.10 ERA at home last season. Feliz had a 5.73 ERA in June and has a 4.00 ERA in July. Maybe he'll be more relaxed or maybe he'll feel more pressure with two other viable options in the bullpen.

Before last season started what were the odds Heath Bell would be in a Padres uniform on August 1, 2011?

By: Brian Rutherford
On: 7/31/2011 12:36:00 PM
Very good aspect on Adams... younger more inexperienced or not...For some reason I dont recall Adams being very dependable in Milwaukee...Honestly? Even Cliff Lee was suspect in that jet stream, gar I wish they would take out those suites so a good pitcher would actually consider signing in Arlington.

re:Bell a Pad tomorrow? Still think its highly unlikely, think you're gonna see Reagins (Angels) pull off a last minute thing to counter act the Rangers movements, just like last season with Lee/Haren

I remain convinced Erik Bedard will go to a big gun, i.e. BOS, NYY or STL. Someone is playing this one very quietly if I make my guess.

By: Brian Rutherford

I think you're right @bogfella, but I think Bedard is the type of player that can pass through waivers...

MLB just showed Hall on the computer, Gammons on the phone, and Rosentheau on his Blackberry...lmao I got a kick how the age group fit with their technology devices lol I will put my money on the Cards to get Bell. Pads need some bats...Cards are a good fit.

By: Kevin Payne

Jeff - apparently you haven't seen Jeff Baker (four walks in 150 ABs) play. How don't you unload Carlos Pena? Don't forget the Rays gutted their farm system with the Garza deal.

By: at325802
On: 7/31/2011 2:12:00 PM
I would like what the Orioles were able to do by moving Derrek Lee, who obviously had no future in Baltimore and making room for Chris Davis. Davis may simply need a change of scenery, but my problem with this is that they already have a hitter with lots of power and lots of strikeouts - Mark Reynolds. Uehara has been so good over the last year but it was not that long ago that he was a real injury concern. I don't see what the team gained by acquiring Tommy Hunter. It is a desperation move by a team that can't count on any of its young pitching - Matusz, Arrieta, Tillman, Britton. That group is quickly looking more like Hayden Penn, Adam Loewen, Garrett Olson and Daniel Cabrera every day. Aaron Baker looks underwhelming for Lee, given Lee isn't worth much anymore.

By: Erickson
On: 7/31/2011 2:15:00 PM
My prediction: Chris Davis does more than Derrek Lee down the stretch.

By: Kevin Payne
On: 7/31/2011 2:26:00 PM
at325802- my column which should be up shortly I pointed out the same thing, Reynolds and Davis are a match made in heaven. That being said, I agree with Jeff. Davis is worth a shot, he's only two years removed from a 21-homer season and is 25. It's too early to give up on a guy who was hitting a homer in every eight ABs in the minors. He looked terrible against Garcia's splitter today - that's what will make or break him - hitting breaking pitches. If I'm the Pirates, I'd rather have Pena, I wonder if they inquired about him (Pena has a contract that's $2.75 more than Lee.)

By: Kevin Payne
On: 7/31/2011 2:27:00 PM
Oh and that's $2.75 million more, although I'm sure everyone could figure that out ;)

I like Davis more than Lee from this point on, also. But I'm not sure more relaxed = better performance from Feliz. He's one that at least claims to need the pressure to perform well. If he views Adams as competition/pressure, then the performance may get better, regardless. Chances are, his performance will remain near the same. But now, we can blame the blow-ups on either the extra pressure, or being more relaxed. Whichever way we wish to interpret it.

Zen: You were right - the A's didn't trade any of their collection of OF/CI mediocrities. That is somewhat stunning. It makes me like the acquisition of Brandon Allen that much less, if he is going to Sacramento or will rot on the bench.

This is an outrage. If any Rotowire radio hosts want to hear a guy rant like there's no tomorrow, just have me on the show this week...

Why did Ned Colletti feel the need to insert himself in the Erik Bedard deal? Ok, so the PCL is an extreme hitter's league, but Trayvon Robinson's stats if you please:

.293/.375/.563, 26 HR, speed to burn...solid defense. Oh wait, we have Juan Rivera and the son of a HOFer to handle LF? My bad. I'm fully convinced that Ned knows he's not going to be around under the new ownership, so he's screwing with the future of the francise with this ridiculous deal. The return for Robinson? A catcher who turns 24 this week and can't hit for average or power, a reliever who isn't even in the Rotowire database (hint: not a good sign), and another mediocre reliever who shares Barney Fife's last name. I'm not going to be much fun at the family dinner tonight. Oh, but hey, the Dodgers got the second best player in baseball that has the last name Castellanos in the Furcal deal.

Apparently the Moneyball book and movie have gone to Beane's head. He needs to go! Quit or fired he needs a change of venue because he has lost his swagger! If I am the A's owner and I say to my GM how come you didn't trade the rest of our mediocre crappy veterans and you tell me because you don't want to lose 100 games this season? I would fire you on the spot for insane stupidity that is detrimental to the team. Losing games with young players is not a bad thing. You get a higher draft slot and your young players get 2 months of must needed practice vs big leaguer's that they won't get in the minors. Weeks, Green, Allen, Taylor, Carter, Ross....Give them 2 months full time....at worst you can evaluate them better. I like Billy Beane. He is one of the greatest GM's of all time imho...but someone needs to go Rock n Rolla slap scene on him because he is failing miserably! Why did the Dodgers trade Robinson for prospects? WTF was that????

By: Dave Regan
On: 7/31/2011 5:22:00 PM
@Zen - The guys the Dodgers got were technically prospects, but prospects in name only.

Think of it from a fantasy perspective. Do you really like being the guy who gives up the best player in a deal without getting at least one sure thing in return? I would have no problem trading Albert Pujols, but I'm not going to do it unless I'm getting a first baseman like Mark Teixeira / Ryan Howard plus more in return. Sickening.

By: Zenguerrilla
On: 7/31/2011 5:34:00 PM
Yeah, I don't blame you for being ticked off Dave. I had to reread that deal 5x's because I didn't understand the Dodgers part in it. There must be something more to the story. Robinson get caught with Colleti's wife??? Baffling!

As a Giants fan I think the Dodgers trading Trayvon for 4 bags of balls is an excellent move :)
Though also as a Giants fan I sure wish SF had picked up a catcher who can hit over .180, and almost any SS other than Orlando Cabrera. Doesn't Sabean realize that his miserable .277 OBA is a lot more important than his middling .244 batting average? An OPS under .600, and very suspect SS range, does not seem like great help for a team shooting for post-season success.

When upgrading to Office 2010, Office 2010 it removed my old version of Outlook Microsoft Office 2010 including all of my e-mails. I was planning Microsoft Office to convert to Windows Mail but didn't get Outlook 2010 a chance. My other office programs are still Microsoft outlook 2010 in tact. I feel there should have been at Microsoft Office 2007 least a warning message or option before Office 2010 professional removing Outlook. I upgraded from Adobe Acrobat version 2002 so there are a lot of changes Microsoft outlook to get used to but so far very pleased with all the extra the Office 2010 home and student 2010 version has to offer. Easy to use once you learn the interface. I have to search to find some of the tools I was accustomed to using.

Do Analytics Take the Fun Out of Sports?
Apparently that was the topic of one of the presentations at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston last week. The presenter, Yale's Edward Tufte, opined:

Don't let people tell you analytics are reductionist and take the joy out of sports. They mostly just take the stupidity out of sports.

Of course, few battle plans survive the actual war. Here are the results:
