Super Bowl Prop Bets

Giants money line +120----- $30

Obviously the Patriots may well win this game. But in what strikes me as a 50/50 sort of game, one which should come down to the fourth quarter, I'll take better than even money, particularly since it means I'll be rooting for the team I'd rather see win the game.

Under 55 total points, Even ----- $10
Under 27.5 points for the first half, Even ------ $10

Didn't we see these two teams play a scoreless first half earlier this year? Obviously that won't happen again, but 55 total points suggests a final score of 29-26. I think that's just too high. The Giants defense is playing at a high level, and I'd be a bit surprised to see the Patriots get into the 30s.

Under 48.5 points (alternate total) +180 ----- $10

If the O/U really should be 51 or 52,as I believe, then under 48.5 isn't asking too much, particularly at a return of nearly 2:1.

Will either team score in the last two minutes of the first half?
Yes -280
No +220 --------- $10

I don't understand this one at all. Yes, I realize with two good quarterbacks that there's a good chance of a score in the final two minutes of the first half, especially with timeouts being used. However, it wouldn't surprise me at all to see no points put up in the final two minutes ... heck, it happened between these teams earlier this year!. A return of greater than 2:1 seems appealing here. I see this as another example of how the public doesn't like for something not to happen, and Vegas builds that bias into the line.

Will the team that scores first win the game?
Yes -170
No +140 ---------- $10

If you think this will be a close game that comes down to the fourth quarter, as I do, then it may not matter much which team scores first.

First score of the game will be:
Touchdown -190
Any other score +155 ------- $10

This is another bet that strikes me as much more random than the juice suggests.

Will one quarter be scoreless?
Yes +300 ------------- $10
No -400

If you think the game will be lower-scoring than the experts predict, a scoreless quarter is not unfathomable, and a 3:1 return isn't bad at all. Plus, this bet gives you four chances to win.

Will Giants convert a fourth down attempt?
Yes +160 --------------- $10
No -200

Will Patriots convert a fourth down attempt?
Yes +130 ------------------ $10
No -150

We all know Belichick is aggressive on fourth down at all stages of the game. Plus, it's likely that one of these teams will have to go for it on fourth down in the fourth quarter. By making both bets, I only need one conversion to come out ahead, and who knows - both teams converting a fourth down wouldn't be that nuts.

I'll admit I'm a novice when it comes to parlays, but if I could do so with the following four bets, it would be pretty sweet.

If not, my theory of the game (close, low-scoring) makes each a fine bet on its own as well.

Will there be overtime?
Yes +700 ------------------- $10
No -1200

Will the game be decided by exactly three points:
Yes +325 ------------ $10
No -450

Will the game be tied after 0-0 (excluding conversions)?
Yes Even ----------------- $10
No -130

Last score of the game will be:
Touchdown -240
Any other score +180 ------------- $10

Other than the Giants and the under, the thing I'm probably most confident about for Super Bowl 46 is fading Rob Gronkowski. High ankle sprains are a big deal - we've seen it over and over again. Expecting him to be himself with just two weeks to heal is too much to ask. And while I'm loathe to put too much stock into what the Patriots report about injuries mid-week, the fact that Gronk is wearing a walking boot is telling.

Basically, I think Gronk will suit up and play, but be far less effective than normal. As a result, somebody will pick up the slack for the Patriots, and Aaron Hernandez seems like the logical choice.

Rob Gronkowski, total receiving yards
Over 79.5, -115
Under 79.5, -115 --------------- $10

Rob Gronkowski, longest reception
Over 21.5, -130
Under 21.5, even ---------------- $10

Rob Gronkowski, will he score a touchdown
Yes -160
No+130 --------------- $10

Aaron Hernandez, total receptions
Over 5.5, -115 --------------- $10
Under 5.5, -115

Aaron Hernandez, receiving yards
Over 66.5, -115 -------------------- $10
Under 66.5, -115

Even if I'm wrong about Gronk's health, all of these prop bets seem like reasonable choices regardless. Hence, in a sense, it's like I have two chances to win each of these bets - one if Gronk is hurt, and the other if the game plays out in a way where Hernandez does well anyway.

Proving you can bet on anything, the over/under on Kelly Clarkson's national anthem is one minute and 32 seconds. Last year, Christina Aguilera stretched it to 1:54, making the over/under a push (despite screwing up a line). I'm going with the under this time.

What do you think of Manningham at 30/1 to score the first TD? Seems to be some value there and is easily worth a ten-spot.

Reasonable enough. But I think Manningham is a bit overhyped right now. He's done well in the playoffs so far, so I'm more inclined to fade him than anything else. But 30:1 is fair - it's better than betting on Kelly Clarkson, anyway. ;)

Come on Mark! Where's the love? Clarkson has been healthy all season.

I see 15-1 on Manningham or close to it most everywhere....where did you get 30-1? Casino in Reno? My pick for the first td is Travis Beckum. Good luck with your 19 props....that is a lot of action!

If Mario Manningham has 4-5 receptions Patriots win, thats my prediction, Giants need to be smart and feed Cruz and Nicks, if Manningham is getting fed the ball it spells doom for the Giants, it's that simple.

Gronkowski, under 80 yards.

Out of all my "fade Gronk" plays, I like the under 80 yards the most, Dr. Kenton. A hobbled Gronk could still catch a short TD simply due to his size, or could catch several short passes *because* of his injury (because he's not running downfield as much). But a hobbled Gronk should struggle to make explosive plays downfield, hence the under 79.5 yards.

I'm surprised Welker's O/U for catches is just seven. I bet he pushes or wins at that number. They'll need him, and the Giants probably will be fine with a lot of Welker catches so long as he's not breaking tackles and making sizable gains. A 12-147 type of game is possible.

I looked at tight end props today and Gronk has been lowered, Hernandez raised.

I agree Mark. Gronkowski is such a unique physical player in that they could utilize him for short yardage plays where he could potentially get a receiving touchdown but he will not be able to push off his ankle to have the same vertical or lateral movement. Additionally, straight runs up the seam will be easier for him but they will likely force him onto his left ankle by bumping him on the line and when he does catch the ball, watch for him to reinjure that ankle trying to make a move to avoid the defender. Looking forward to watching this game within the game.

Gronk lowered, Hernandez raised ... I guess my advice altered the line. ;)

OK Mark - I hope you're right; I went with you on the lines I could find that were better than what you played - I got +240 on no score last 2 minutes, and +160 on 1st score not a TD! Good luck to us!

Super Bowl Sunday should be a National Holiday, if a President hopeful said that if he was elected he would make Super Bowl Sunday a national holiday he would get my vote hands down. Why isn't it a national holiday yet, what is America waiting for? I think I heard that 30%-40% of all the televisions will have the Super Bowl on it, I'm calling bullcrap right now, there is no way 60%-70% of televisions are tuned to Pawn Stars, Storage Wars, or Hoarders instead of the Super Bowl, Everybody that is somewhat normal will be watching the Super Bowl tonight, I think 90%-95% of the people in the USA are normal, and that is the percentage of televisions that are probably tuned into the Super Bowl, please stop lying to us America, we are not stupid.

How BABIP Affects the Value of Strikeouts and Walks
The league-average batting-average-on-balls-in-play (BABIP) has been on a downward trajectory for the last half decade, something that has implications for the values of different at-bat outcomes. BABIP is down precipitously this season (.289), though it's hard to tell to what extent that's due to all the shifting defenses (better data on where balls are hit have enabled this), or is simply just an April cold-weather/small sample anomaly.
NHL Playoff Observations -- Monday
Just a few things that caught my eye ...
  • Alexander Semin was on the wrong side of the grocery stick most of the night. You know, that spot between the back-up goalie and the rest of the team ... the one where the dead wood goes so it doesn't get in the way of on-the-fly changes.
  • Honey badger don't care. Honey badger doesn't give a $%!&.  T.J. Oshie gave up four inches and 50 pounds to Dustin Penner, but he didn't care. Then again, honey badger didn't care when he hit Rick Nash a few years ago, either. I wonder if the NHL would let me get a Blues #74 jersey with Honey Badger on the back.
Buy Lowest
Every year, we hear advice about how it's time to "buy low" on struggling stars like Albert Pujols, Giancarlo Stanton and Robinson Cano. "Get them now for cheap before they heat up!" Except that the market for superstars - at least in competitive leagues - usually doesn't move much after one bad month. (Whether it should in these cases is another question). It's more likely that the Pujols and Stanton owners are doubling down, figuring that only a hot streak from a player of that caliber can undo the damage that's already been done.

That doesn't mean you can't take advantage of the market's early overreaction, but you'll have to aim a little lower and take on quite a bit more risk. The players listed below are those who should be available at an actual discount.

Fantasy Rookies
Now that the 2012 NFL Draft is complete and rosters look about the way they will when training camps open in late July, it’s time to start the speculation train full steam ahead to fantasy draft days. Many players taken in this class will have a fantasy impact, some immediate, some in small spurts as rookies and some not for years to come.
