RotoWire Staff Auction League

The RotoWire Steak League switched to an auction format this year, but this auction league has actually been in existence the last few years. It's a 12-team league, $200 budget, 10 starters: QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, RB/WR flex, WR/TE flex, TE, K, Team Defense. 7-man benches.

We did the auction on ESPN's auction software (which is pretty slick) last night.

Here's my squad:

- Michael Turner, $59 - It's not a PPR league, so I like Turner about as much as Ray Rice, who went for $64, maybe even a little more. I usually acquire one elite back in auctions.

- Calvin Johnson, $44 - I paid full price for him, no doubt. By way of comparison, Randy Moss went for $49, Brandon Marshall $36, Greg Jennings $39, Reggie Wayne $39, Andre Johnson $50, Miles Austin $41, Roddy White $36. I much prefer Team Cole's purchase of Marshall, for the price.

- Tony Romo, $21 - I normally don't pay for a quarterback, but I liked the price.

- Antonio Gates, $22 - Tight ends went for cheap in this auction. I overpaid relative to the tight ends, but relative to what he'll do on the field, I'm pretty happy. I think he's going to get a ton of red zone targets with Vincent Jackson out of the picture currently.

- Chris Wells, $30 - This was a jump bid (from $24), and frankly I'm surprised it stopped there. I was really advancing the bid/price-enforcing. Getting him forced me to change up my strategy a little.

- Santana Moss, $6 - Taking what I can get - if McNabb heals, Moss should benefit.

- Terrell Owens, $4 - I'd kick ass in 1998.

- Ryan Longwell, $1

- Bengals D/ST, $1

- Louis Murphy, $2 - Even if Chaz Schillens didn't have the knee surgery I would have liked Murphy, but I think there's some untapped potential with him. He averaged over 15 yards per catch last year, though his catchers/targets numbers weren't good. I think that was a function of JaMarcus Russell - we'll see.

- Matthew Stafford, $2

- Laurence Maroney, $3 - I'm not in love, but he was the last quasi-starting running back out there.

- Ryan Torain, $1 - As far as the "commons bin" running backs out there go, I like this one. LJ and Not-so-fast Willie Parker look to be on the outs.

- Anthony Dixon, $1 - For what it's worth, Brian Westbrook is unowned.

- Kevin Walter, $1 - The anti-trendy, but Houston's offense might support three WR's anyhow.

- Donnie Avery, $1 - Post-hype sleeper? Or more likely, wish-casting that he stays relatively healthy.

- Bernard Scott, $1

One note - "Team Henry" was actually ESPN's AI, after we had someone not be able to make the auction due to connectivity problems.

With the two WR-eligible flex spots, and it not being a PPR league to bump WR salaries north, my main strategy was to get four good receivers I could swap in and out of those slots as needed - Austin, White, Colston and Crabtree for $122 total was as good as I could have expected... I wish I could have gotten a McCoy or Jahvid Best as my RB2 instead of the Bradshaw/Brown/Taylor committee approach, but otherwise I think my roster came out looking pretty good.

I either did or did not get carried away taking four RBs. Here's the order in which I drafted them: Rice ($64), Grant ($35), Spiller ($14), and Best ($25). I didn't intend to take Spiller, really. I was just bidding and ended up being the last one.

In any case, I don't think I overpaid on any of them, although I probably wanna trade with Siegrist and take one of his seven or whatever receivers.

No Liss?

The official explanation on Liss is that he has too many leagues. The unofficial explanation is that he's scared of me. ;)

I agree with Erik about WRs, which is why I concentrated there. It's interesting to compare the teams that did that (I'm Buffalo Stompede, Erik is Toronto, Payne) with the teams that didn't (Gleichman, Dalton, Carson).

Ditto with the WR strategy. When you see the elite backs going for $60-$70, I'd rather go cheaper with Fitz/Wayne/Moss and take my chances with Foster and FJax.
The only other player I wanted way Jay Cutler but I knew Carson would pay any price given Cutler's GB rate and inflated BABIP from last year.

Yeah, I like the WR-based strategies that you guys employed. Although it had the unfortunate effect of driving up all the WR prices - except for OchoCinco's - not sure what happened there. The TE prices really bummed me out - I really like Gates this year - no Jackson, good schedule (AFC West, NFC West), so at the time I thought I was getting a nice price. But the TE runs never really happened in this auction. It cost me the chance to get some decent endgame guys. Oh well, live and learn.

Foster went for $16 more than the steak auction after the Tate injury. I thought he may get even more a boost then that.

Peter-loved Foster at that Price. Great offense, Slaton is the change-of-pace back which doesn't=goal line back. Just hang onto the ball, Arian.

Yeah, you could have waited on TE and used that money to get another good WR. But, if Gates puts up monster, elite WR type numbers (which is possible), all is good.

Needless to say, it's been a great World Cup thus far. The USMNT having some success would be awesome.

Just a few things that caught my eye:
  • Alec Martinez's Cup-winning goal celebration? # priceless. I wonder if he'll ever get his gloves back.
  • Henrik Lundqvist stopped the 50th shot of the game. He couldn't stop the 51st. #connsmythe if the Rangers had found a way to come back in this series.
Do Analytics Take the Fun Out of Sports?
Apparently that was the topic of one of the presentations at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston last week. The presenter, Yale's Edward Tufte, opined:

Don't let people tell you analytics are reductionist and take the joy out of sports. They mostly just take the stupidity out of sports.

Is he right?

RotoWire's AL LABR Squad

The Problem With Drafting Billy Hamilton
Billy Hamilton went for $28 in the NL LABR auction this past weekend. I discussed this with a fellow writer who participates in Tout Wars with me later this month and we discussed the problem with investing heavily into Hamilton.
