Even as a native Long Islander, I just didn't understand the four-year $10 million dollar extension for Chris Higgins..Yes he's a talent, but hasnt scored more than 20 goals since 2007-08.

Anyways, Rangers just sent both Kreider and JT Miller to AHL, but only picked up Clowe. Staal is still two weeks away from return minimum... I know even if they kidnapped Bettman, they dont have the flexibility for Yandle, but he would certainly be a huge weight shifter and give them a fantastic chance of hanging with P's and B's.

Most likely just irresponsible rumors, but trending on twitter, Jack Johnson left Columbus practice, no word on whether other issues or actually being targeted.

Blackhawks and Bruins trade minor league forwards. Maxime Suave to Chicago, Rob Flick to Boston.

The Blue Jackets do have a ton of depth on D, but I'd be very surprised if Johnson is the guy they move unless it's for something notable. Say, Pominville and change.

Erik, agreed, would have to be an offensive threat. John Davidson has really got Jackets moving in right direction, just hope the draft goes well for the leagues David.

Good trade by Stevie Y, I think Bishop is a number one waiting to flourish...Conacher will be missed and should fit in well with the Sens...

LOL at the Flyers, although I suppose Mason could rebound with a change of scenery. Philly isn't exactly a safe landing spot for emotionally fragile netminders though.

Wow. That's a pretty hefty price to pay for Gaborik. It's arguably more than they got back for Nash, and no one in their right might would swap Nash for Gaborik straight up.

Leighton heads to Columbus from Philly along with a third rounder... what are the odds he has a better career than Mason going forward?

The Gaborik deal surprised me. And under the heading delicious irony, the Jackets make the playoffs with the Rangers' sniper AND sandpaper, and the Rangers don't with the Jackets' sniper and sandpaper. John Davidson has done very well since he arrived ...

agreed Janet...although I never doubted Johnny D... love that man! Its a terrific move for both sides I think... puts buts back in the seats, sells some jersies, Columbus didnt have to give up any serious talent or draft picks....Rangers get Brassard, a bit streaky, Dorsett, damaged goods at least for the next two weeks and Moore who has yet to prove himself. Lots of risk reward on the Rangers side. I really think Gabby has something left in the tank, still recovering from surgery. Big fish, small pond should help spark his career again.

I cant get confirmation on who, but apparently Rangers official website stating there was two minor league defensemen go with Gabby to Columbus.

Washington better make the playoffs or dealing Forsberg to get Erat, who I like, will look even worse.

Janet, don't rub it on Gaborik, I am already having a hard time dealing with it. :)

Jan, think of the times you have sworn about Gaborik this season...you get back some sandpaper in Derek Dosett and Janet wasn't rubbing it in, just stating a fact. Ryan Clowe is already on his way to almost as many goals as Gabby with his first game tonight.

Jan, re Forsberg...as we talked about earlier, it just doesn't make sense to get back Erat. Yes, he asked to be traded, but Erat isn't exactly going to hit another gear that he simply hasn't been showing. We've seen Erat's ceiling and that's fine for most teams, but Forsberg's is slightly higher (read with sarcasm...)

Rangers made some moves to address some needs and you have to commend them for that, but I love all the talk about Gaborik and Nash making an impact together from the offseason.

What do you imagine the conversation was when Gaborik contacted Anisimov and Dubinsky...

Needless to say, it's been a great World Cup thus far. The USMNT having some success would be awesome.
La-La-La-L.A. Gets Lord Stanley!
Just a few things that caught my eye:
  • Alec Martinez's Cup-winning goal celebration? # priceless. I wonder if he'll ever get his gloves back.
  • Henrik Lundqvist stopped the 50th shot of the game. He couldn't stop the 51st. #connsmythe if the Rangers had found a way to come back in this series.
Do Analytics Take the Fun Out of Sports?
Apparently that was the topic of one of the presentations at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston last week. The presenter, Yale's Edward Tufte, opined:

Don't let people tell you analytics are reductionist and take the joy out of sports. They mostly just take the stupidity out of sports.

Is he right?

The Problem With Drafting Billy Hamilton
Billy Hamilton went for $28 in the NL LABR auction this past weekend. I discussed this with a fellow writer who participates in Tout Wars with me later this month and we discussed the problem with investing heavily into Hamilton.
