NHL Trade Deadline Blog

Have all the big trades already happened, or will we see a big move today? Is there a chance that either Martin St. Louis or Martin Brodeur will have a new address by the end of the day? Will Vancouver tear it down in the wake of the Roberto Luongo deal? What will the Red Wings do to address the loss of Henrik Zetterberg? Will I keep asking questions?

It's done.

Martin St-Louis to the Rangers for Ryan Callahan. News arrives just as Stamkos announces he's returning to the lineup. Obviously, despite less than $1 million difference in salary negotiations, Rangers couldn't extend Callahan.

Looks like picks involved in Cally trade...

Lightning get Callahan 1RP in 2015 and 2nd in 2014
Rangers get Martin St. Louis and a conditional pick if Cally re-signs with TB

Stevie Y used every bit of leverage and nailed this trade. Once again, Rangers fans lose their number one pick.. and they wonder why they cant develop a Sidney Crosby.

Glen Sather needs to be treated for ADD.

Update on NYR/TB Deal, including conditional picks.

Lightning get Callahan 1RP in 2015 and 2nd in 2014
-if Callahan re-signs then NYR get TB 2nd in 2015

Rangers get Martin St. Louis and a conditional pick if Cally re-signs with TB
-if Callahan re-signs then NYR get TB 2nd in 2015 TB gets Rangers 7th in 2015

I will adjust my ADD statement, that's not bad terms, cause the number one goes no where if they can just pry their captain back to NY this summer.

The number goes no where if Tampa Bay resigns him.

Anyways, great start to the deadline day. Everyone think the Rangers are done? Who's next? More Goalie carousel? Time for Brodeur to get dealt?

With Martin St. Louis gone, that means market for Chris Stewart, Matt Moulson, Ales Hemsky, Marian Gaborik, and maybe even Jiri Hudler and Mike Cammalleri got that much better.

Agreed, thinking Brian Burke is next up. Michael Cammaelleri, come on down!

Not a trade really, but a wave in the fantasy world:

Several reports have Cory Conacher being claimed by the Sabres.
By: brutherford
On: 3/5/2014 9:27:00 AM
Several reports have Oilers trading Ales Hemsky to Senators for 3rd-rounder in 2015 and 5th-rounder in 2014.
By: Paul Bruno
On: 3/5/2014 9:55:00 AM
Ales Hemsky moves from the Oilers to the Senators for a paid of mid-range draft picks. he scored only nine goals (20 points) last year and has slumped to nine goals and 26 points in 55 games this season. Still the Sens need offensive depth and will use the rest of this schedule to evaluate this pending UFA, even though their playoff hopes are dim, at best.

Chris Phillips is staying with a two-year extension worth $2.5 million per season.
Brayden McNabb goes to the Kings for prized prospect Hudson Fasching.
Devan Dubnyk to Montreal for future considerations.

Penguins not interested in Vanek. Kings reportedly join in on Kesler sweepstakes.
By: Paul Bruno
On: 3/5/2014 10:03:00 AM
Devan Dubnyk traded by Nashville to Montreal. This is an insurance move to make sure that Carey Price comes back when he's 100%. Longer term impact is that Dubnyk could be a tradeable commodity in the off-season. His star has fallen this season as he has slumped to a 3.43 gaa and .891 save pct after posting career-best numbers last year in Edmonton.

Marian Gaborik heads to the Kings. Jackets will retain some salary.

Let the floodgates open. Curious to see what Anaheim does now.

On: 3/5/2014 10:22:00 AM
Marian Gaborik has indeed been moved the LA Kings, as I speculated earlier. He is a game-breaking scorer, as long as he stays healthy. He's not a Darryl Sutter-type player, but can get the big goal. That fills a big need in LA. No details yet about what assets are going to Columbus.

Have to believe news will soon include Vanek, Moulson or Cammalleri...

better late than never..

Brayden McNabb and two second round picks to the Los Angeles Kings for two prospects, one being Minnesota Golden Gophers forward Hunter Fasching according to TSN's Bob McKenzie.

Tuomo Ruutu moves from Carolina to New Jersey.

Gaborik has always appeared streaky to me. One of the most talented wingers in the league and he's a handful, but I'm surprised to see Columbus move him in the midst of a playoff race. But, I suppose they're in the playoff race despite Gaborik.

Kesler doesn't make sense in Los Angeles, unless they move Richards down a line. Kesler won't be a third-line center which is why Pittsburgh is surprising, but I suppose he can move to a wing if need be.

Lastly,I don't see Brodeur moving. No market for him.

On: 3/5/2014 11:03:00 AM
Gonna put Kesler to Anaheim out there. They gotta up the ante with the Kings being so bold.
By: pennucci42
On: 3/5/2014 11:04:00 AM
I like the Ruutu move, but would have liked it more about 4 years ago. He's a versatile forward who can play in all situations but that cap hit isn't something I like. I've been iffy on Andrei Loktionov since he arrived from Los Angeles, but Ruutu can at least be used in a handful of situations.

Kesler to Anaheim makes more sense than Los Angeles. Ducks desperately need a No. 2 center with how top heavy they are

Bruins and Red Wings are the leaders in trying to deal for Ehrhoff in Buffalo.

Kesler to Pittsburgh is a hot rumble right now...I am wondering when they make the move to upgrade that defense.

Garth Snow has to move Vanek today or he will have (more) egg on his face than any other GM, won't he?
By: Paul Bruno
On: 3/5/2014 11:23:00 AM
Leafs GM Nonis not likely to move Dave Bolland, a pending UFA. He has missed 50 games with a torn Achilles tendon and the Leafs want to see what he can give them over the rest of the season, and hopefully the playoffs, too.

Love seeing the fake Twitter feeds on the Vanek-to-PIT rumors. And everyone falling for it. Too bad, too - as a Vanek owner in my home league, that would have been a home run.

Florida moves Tim Thomas to Dallas Stars...This improves the depth behind Lehtonen, for sure, but I would have loved the byplay between him and Luongo.

Columbus acquires D Nick Schultz from Edmonton...good for Jackets...not sure what Edmonton is doing here as they NEED experienced D-men!
By: Paul Bruno
On: 3/5/2014 11:34:00 AM
Pens pick up Marcel Goc to bolster offensive depth, with shipping future considerations to the ever-rebuilding Panthers. This is the type of deal that will go unnoticed until Goc scores a playoff goal for Pittsburgh...I am betting it will be a big one, too.

Devils are now reporting that they won't move Brodeur today.
By: Paul Bruno
On: 3/5/2014 11:49:00 AM
Bruins add Andrei Meszaros for a third round draft pick headed to the Flyers. Meszaros is a physical player with some good offensive instincts...a nice short term move, hoping to fill a big need with Boston.

By: pennucci42

I can't see Halak being too much more of an upgrade over Holtby simply because of the way Washington plays and the defenders in front of him. This ain't st louis.
By: Erickson
On: 3/5/2014 7:30:00 PM
Nonetheless, as an owner of both Vanek and Halak in THL (our home league that has a lot of RotoWire folks), I'm pretty happy with today's results. Halak in WAS is a far better result than Halak in BUF.

La-La-La-L.A. Gets Lord Stanley!
Just a few things that caught my eye:
  • Alec Martinez's Cup-winning goal celebration? # priceless. I wonder if he'll ever get his gloves back.
  • Henrik Lundqvist stopped the 50th shot of the game. He couldn't stop the 51st. #connsmythe if the Rangers had found a way to come back in this series.
Do Analytics Take the Fun Out of Sports?
Apparently that was the topic of one of the presentations at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston last week. The presenter, Yale's Edward Tufte, opined:

Don't let people tell you analytics are reductionist and take the joy out of sports. They mostly just take the stupidity out of sports.

Is he right?

The Problem With Drafting Billy Hamilton
Billy Hamilton went for $28 in the NL LABR auction this past weekend. I discussed this with a fellow writer who participates in Tout Wars with me later this month and we discussed the problem with investing heavily into Hamilton.
