NFL Midseason Draft

A few of us got together last night to do a 10-team midseason draft. It was standard scoring (no PPR), and we start 1 Team QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 2 FLEX (RB/WR/TE), 1 TE, 1 Team K. It was 20 rounds, and it's a best-ball format, i.e., you get your ideal starting lineup every week. There are no add/drops, trades or moves of any kind.

Thanks to Yahoo! Sports' Scott Pianowski for setting it up.

Big expectations for Pierre Thomas the rest of the way. Steve Smith (NYG) looks like the biggest mover from the preseason.

I'm a big Pierre Thomas believer so I am happy to see him in the first round. I'm a bit surprised at Fitzy going so early but I do believe he will put it all together soon. I just think his perceived value is a bit low right now.

LT in round 4, really? Shouldn't he be like round 6 or later? He's done nothing and shows no signs of improvement. The offense is much better with Sproles in an all passing type attack. Turner might never figure this out, but round 4?

Eddie Royal (shakes head), sigh... Come on man! I've already dropped him in every league I had him in because he's unstartable. The same goes for Chris Henry.

I don't understand the Crabtree pick in round 10 with Burleson still left on the board. Has no one seen Burleson's targets this season? He's #3 in the NFL... #3!!! Good pick 3D.

Funny, where would Mendenhall have gone last week?

Round 13 - you have to love Royal there. Four weeks isn't that long - he's a good NFL player. Most of my guys were drafted as if I were still using the preseason cheat sheet. I expect to do well, though I should have taken a second kicker rather than a fourth QB.

Pierre Thomas has more upside than anyone in the NFL. He's risky, too, but I play these things to win. I'd have taken him second overall.

You just never know in this format. The lack of transactions makes luck a bigger format than most leagues. For instance, Fred Taylor's injury announcement came after we drafted, hurting Steingall and making my Maroney/SMorris combo better than it should have been. Luck at play already and it's only been one day!

Fiorentino, Steingall, and Anestis only took one kicker, too. DDD took a 4th QB instead of a 2nd TE.

I generally like 3 QB, 2 TE, 2 K in this format, and the rest RBs and WRs, unless you get a top QB early, then I can see going with 2 QB. I can't see taking 4, particularly since it's "team QB," as that vitiates the injury risk. You need as many RBs and WRs as possible because some of them will get hurt.

Well if you actually look at the highest scoring players, they're QBs, so 3D and Pianowski maximized that scoring oppo. more than any other owners. I actually think that's smart in a best ball format. With 3 QBs there's a chance that one will have a break out game vs a weak defense more than just 2 QBs. In the same school, I think taking 2 kickers is smart because kickers can net you anywhere from 8 to 10 or more points if you get the right guy on the right week. If you land just 1 you are at the mercy of his schedule every week and there are byes. Some guys will get 0 just based on bye weeks.

I actually drafted keeping the bye week in mind. I have two kickers-both coming off of bye weeks. I took only two QBs-Dallas and Philly because I thought they were both top-10 fantasy starts-even if McNabb gets hurt again. Tight ends are very underrated in this format, I think it's necessary to get three. It's too bad this didn't get more time on top-3 latest blogs.

Stopa, I love your pairing of Pierre Thomas with the Saints QB. You have to figure if one doesn't have a big week then the other will. It is a better option then trying to pair PT with Colston (or any other N.O. receiver) since Brees is likely to spread the ball around as good as any QB in the league. This is one of the times were the "putting all your eggs in one basket" philosophy should work more often than not.

I like Reggie Bush in this format since it is "best-ball" and you can basically just hope for a few home run performances before the end of the year.

I actually made a mistake and thought we had one more round left, or I would have taken a second TE instead of a fourth QB. Although the TEs left were slim pickings, taking 4 QBs made even less sense for me since I went with P. Manning early on. Oh well.

John, that's exactly what I thought about Brees/Thomas. Didn't plan it that way, but when Rivers went two spots before me, it made sense. I invested heavily in Saints (Bush and Shockey, too) but their schedule looks quite favorable.

The "best ball" format is designed for guys like Reggie Bush. He will hit home runs on certain weeks and disappear on others.

Shockey is probably not going to outscore Witten on most weeks but when he does it will probably be because of multiple TDs.

We'll definitely have more of these midseason drafts, JTR, so if you want to join us sometime, let me or someone in the circle know.

I passed in Burleson because I think Hasselbeck is physically shot and too big an injury risk. My gamble is that Crabtree starts 10/25 after the bye. If I'm wrong, it's a bad pick.

I love the insight you guys give. I have seen many different forms of drafts, however I was in one last year that I hadn't seen before, or since. We did a blind, silent, auction. We had a $200 cap and once someeone nominated a player, everyone was given one minute to place a bid on a piece of paper if they wanted to bid. Talk about a poker game. It had more strategy then any auction I have been in. Bid too low, lose the guy, bid too high, waste your money, or get a guy you don't want!!!
I have since moved to a new city, but doing one of these (if you have the time) is a blast!!!

I took LT in round 4 against my better judgement, but as Pianow and Liss will happily tell you, I had to rush to make a decision. I would rather have had Ray Rice or even Marshawn.

14-Team PPR Mock Draft Results
We held the first of several summer mocks leading into the start of the regular season on Thursday at Mock Draft Central. The draft included representatives from Yahoo, Sports Illustrated and NFL.com (among others) and the full results are available here.

I had the eighth overall selection this week, picking in the middle of each round with our 14-team, PPR (one point per reception) format. The scoring was very standard otherwise, with four points for passing TD, six points for rushing/receiving TD, 25 passing yards yielding one point and 10 rushing/receiving yards yielding one point. The starting spots were 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB/WR/TE flex, 1 K, 1 D and six bench spots.

Here's how my team turned out:
Sirius XM Fantasy Draft
In NY for this event that took place yesterday at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square. Have to say it was more fun than I expected - drafting a 12-team standard scoring 1-QB, 2-RB, 3-WR league (with headset and mic) live on the radio and in front of about 200 people. I realized that while it's nice to create fantasy content for a living, it's even better when your job is actually to *play fantasy football.*
Is Backlash to LeBron's Decision Hypocrisy?
When LeBron James made "The Decision" it kind of bugged me.  Still does.  But after reading what Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson had to say I am bugged in another way.  I wonder how much of the LeBron backlash is ted into pure hypocrisy, because in choosing to make his own luck LeBron is forcing us to pay attention to how much most of us want to ignore luck when building our sports heroes.
