NFL Draft Live Blog (Thursday)

The first round is nearing, and the flood of crazy rumors and speculation just keeps picking up. It's looking like Central Michigan's Eric Fisher is set to be the first pick and Kansas City's eventual starter at left tackle. If Fisher is the pick, he'll be the first non-AQ player selected with the first pick since Alex Smith in 2005.

Hello Everybody. Just to add to the flavor that Mario got us started with...There is a chance for this first round to make history. This draft could see five foreign-born players drafted in the first round (Ezekiel Ansah (Ghana), Menelik Watson (England), Bjoern Werner (Germany), Margus Hunt (Estonia), and Jesse Williams (Australia). The most ever

Will the theme of the night be taking high ceiling over low floor? That seems to be the case with the first overall pick with Fisher over Joeckel. One of many story lines to track throughout the night.

Haha. You better watch out Payne...Nassib is like Beetlejuice. Say his name too many times and he appears on your team.

P.S. Your GM was forced to cut Ryan Fitzpatrick due to a crank call. Off to a great start.

Eric Fisher was barely in the top-50 prospects in his home state of Michigan coming out of High School. Now he's the #1 overall pick.

So apparently I needed to be logged into the blog *and* the site, and it only took me 1.5 hours to figure it out. I'm officially getting old.

Anyway, Fisher is good, but I'd rather have Joeckel, and I'd rather have Johnson than both. If I'm the Chiefs, I'd rather extend Albert and draft Lotulelei to be a murderous 3-4 end.

It's a passing league now, and the only way to pass to get some good pass blocking. Gotta have that O-line. I agree that Lotulelei is nasty, though

As a Chargers fan, though, I don't want anything to do with trading up for any of these draft picks. Just wait, or trade back and get more picks where this draft is at its best: the 2-4 rounds.

On Fisher: You might get good pass blocking by keeping Albert and spending the first pick on a RT, but you'll get bad results somewhere else due to the overinvestment. Sign Andre Smith and spend that pick on a position where you'll get a worthwhile return.

First trade of the night. Miami moves UP to select Dion Jordan. There's a surprise.

Were they thinking that Philadelphia was going to get him with the number 4 pick, Mario?

On Jordan: Probably.

I love Lane Johnson for all teams, but especially Philadelphia. He's my favorite of the three tackles.

I keep hearing "athletic" used for each one of these players. Who exactly in the first round isn't athletic, let alone the first five picks?

Fisher: Athletic.

Joeckel: athletic

Now that the Browns did not draft Geno Smith. One has to think that the Bills are already on the phone trying to trade down. No need to rush to draft Nassib.

Do Analytics Take the Fun Out of Sports?
Apparently that was the topic of one of the presentations at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston last week. The presenter, Yale's Edward Tufte, opined:

Don't let people tell you analytics are reductionist and take the joy out of sports. They mostly just take the stupidity out of sports.

Is he right?

RotoWire's AL LABR Squad
The 2014 AL LABR auction went down at the Arizona Republic offices in downtown Phoenix Saturday night. It's a 12-team, 5 x 5, AL-only league with 2 C, 1 1B, 1 2B. 1 3B, 1 SS, 1 CI, 1 MI, 5 OF, 1 U and 9 pitchers. Everyone has $260 to spend.
The Problem With Drafting Billy Hamilton
Billy Hamilton went for $28 in the NL LABR auction this past weekend. I discussed this with a fellow writer who participates in Tout Wars with me later this month and we discussed the problem with investing heavily into Hamilton.

My 12-Team NFBC RotoWire Online Championship Team
I drafted out of the 11-hole for the "Beat Chris Liss" league. I had done a fair amount of research on optimal roster construction from that slot, and I decided I'd go hitter in the first round, three pitchers in 2-4 and then hitting for the next 10 rounds or so before filling in with upside pitchers late. Of course, few battle plans survive the actual war. Here are the results:
