Mitch Stetter, Sooper-LOOGY

Here's the full list of guys Stetter has struck out in the past week: At some point you have to think Stetter will start assuming a bigger role in the Brewers' bullpen hierarchy. He's been death on lefties, allowing a ridiculous 390 OPS in 45 at-bats (.089/.212/.178) but he's been more than effective against righties as well, allowing just a 661 OPS (.206/.308/.353). That performance against RH is actually worse than what he did last season, when his 648 OPS against was completely fueled by his shaky control (.170/.371/.277 in 47 at-bats). His fluky save in his last outing might end up being not so fluky.

Heck, if I'm managing the Brewers, I start giving him and Mark DiFelice (who's even more insanely effective against righties than Stetter is against lefties) crash courses in playing the outfield, so I can swap them back and forth on the mound as needed over a two or three inning stretch...

On: 6/23/2009 11:20:00 AM		 It was very obvious from the day Stetter came up in 2008 that he was a much better loogy option than Brian Shouse, especially since Stetter can get a right-handed hitter out once in a while and Shouse could not. Of course, Shouse was the veteran and was being paid more so it took until the end of the year before super genius Ned Yost started using Stetter before Shouse.

The problem with Stetter has always been control. His slider sweeps so far across the strike zone that it can be hard to throw for strikes. When he's on, though, that pitch can be unhittable to a left-handed hitter. In the month of June he's struck out 13 in 6.1 innings with no walks and one hit allowed. He's struck out the last 11 batters that he's faced.

Unfortunately, the Brewers only carry one lefty in the bullpen, so if you use Stetter for a setup role then you don't have another lefty for loogy situations. The outfield/pitcher platoon with DiFelice is both funny and interesting.

  • We've beaten to death Bill Belichick's decision to go for it on 4th and 2 in Sunday night's game (the best take on it I've seen is here), but the real takeaway is how much Cris Collinsworth, Al Michaels, Tony Dungy and Rodney Harrison felt it was their duty to spout the conventional wisdom without even attempting to analyze Belichick's basis for the decision. Throw in Bob Costas, and it's appalling that five guys collectively making more than $10 million a year to interpret the sport for us didn't even consider the issue from a probability standpoint. Sadly, the NBC crew is probably the best one on TV. (Update: Jon Gruden just defended Belichick's call on MNF - good for him).

    This topic is a spin-off from the Michael Jordan thread of last week.  In the excellent discussion on that thread a mini-debate broke out as to how Charles Barkley compares to Kevin Garnett.  The gist of the brief debate was to question whether Barkley was enough better than Garnett offensively to make them comparable in value as overall players despite Garnett’s huge defensive advantages.  The thing is, though, to me there is a much better comp for Barkley in this generation than Garnett:  Dirk Nowitzki.
