Jimmy Rollins' Slump

The NYTimes' Ben Shpigel examines Rollins' slump on their Bats blog , though his analysis could use more depth. The post is worth a read for Chris Coste's apt gambling analogies, though.

Bottom line: Rollins' walk rate is way down from last year, but nearly in line with his MVP season's in 2007, and his contact rate has remained solidly between .88 and .90 since 2004. His BABIP is just .218, though (career .300), and the culprit is bad luck and a diminished line drive rate. Essentially, he's hitting too many fly balls instead of line drives.

The steals are also down (and he's been caught an uncharacteristic five times in 16 attempts), but remember Rollins stole 30 bases after July 1 last year, so he can make up for the slow start there pretty quickly once the hits drop in.

There's no guarantee Rollins figures out why he's getting under the ball too much, or that his bad luck reverts to normal in the second half. But given his track record, the former is likely, and the latter is a risk you take with any player. If you can get Rollins for 85-90 cents on the preseason dollar, do it. That means if you need steals and have to move a Kevin Youkilis or Nick Markakis, make the trade, especially given the scarcity at shortstop this year.

I'm a Rollins owner who's suffered all year. I have not benched him yet so far. I took him in the 2nd round (17th overall) of my 10 team roto league and thought I was getting a steal! Fortunately I am tied for 1st despite his horrific season. Im looking for a rebound in the 2nd half and have remained patient since I am still competing in the league. I can only imagine how betrayed his owners feel who are not in contention in their leagues. I mean WHO saw this coming?

A look around the league regarding Week 10:
Week 10 Observations
  • We've beaten to death Bill Belichick's decision to go for it on 4th and 2 in Sunday night's game (the best take on it I've seen is here), but the real takeaway is how much Cris Collinsworth, Al Michaels, Tony Dungy and Rodney Harrison felt it was their duty to spout the conventional wisdom without even attempting to analyze Belichick's basis for the decision. Throw in Bob Costas, and it's appalling that five guys collectively making more than $10 million a year to interpret the sport for us didn't even consider the issue from a probability standpoint. Sadly, the NBC crew is probably the best one on TV. (Update: Jon Gruden just defended Belichick's call on MNF - good for him).
  • Dominant Offense but Shaky Defense...Barkley and Dirk
This topic is a spin-off from the Michael Jordan thread of last week.  In the excellent discussion on that thread a mini-debate broke out as to how Charles Barkley compares to Kevin Garnett.  The gist of the brief debate was to question whether Barkley was enough better than Garnett offensively to make them comparable in value as overall players despite Garnett’s huge defensive advantages.  The thing is, though, to me there is a much better comp for Barkley in this generation than Garnett:  Dirk Nowitzki.

    Jennings vs Rose
Last year Derrick Rose was the NBA Rookie of the Year.  One year later, would you take him over current rookie point guard phenom Brandon Jennings?
