In-Stadium Close-Call Replays Are Back!

Ever wonder why, when at the ballpark, a close or controversial call is made by an umpire and the giant stadium Jumbotron does NOT replay the play? Well, in 1976 a half-riot almost broke out at Yankee Stadium when the umpires made a call in favor of the visiting Orioles. The play was shown over and over again on the stadium's new video board and the crowd went nuts. MLB soon ruled that close calls were no longer allowed to be broadcast within the stadium. Read the whole story here .

Of course, that was ancient history. Fans can now see every play over and over again on any number of 24-hour sports channels. So, almost 38 years later, MLB owners just (finally?) ruled that stadiums can now replay close plays. So fantasy fanatics, take a few hours away from your computer and enjoy a sunny day at the ball park. And when the ump screws up, enjoy the replay and boo your brains out!

Do Analytics Take the Fun Out of Sports?
Apparently that was the topic of one of the presentations at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston last week. The presenter, Yale's Edward Tufte, opined:

Is he right?

The Problem With Drafting Billy Hamilton
Billy Hamilton went for $28 in the NL LABR auction this past weekend. I discussed this with a fellow writer who participates in Tout Wars with me later this month and we discussed the problem with investing heavily into Hamilton.

My 12-Team NFBC RotoWire Online Championship Team
I drafted out of the 11-hole for the "Beat Chris Liss" league. I had done a fair amount of research on optimal roster construction from that slot, and I decided I'd go hitter in the first round, three pitchers in 2-4 and then hitting for the next 10 rounds or so before filling in with upside pitchers late. Of course, few battle plans survive the actual war. Here are the results:
