High-Stakes CardRunner's Poker League

A couple months ago, some professional poker players approached us to do a high-stakes expert league with part fantasy experts and part poker pros with some Wall Street guys thrown in as well. That draft took place tonight. It was sponsored by CardRunners.com which essentially is to poker what RotoWire is to fantasy sports.

The league is a 10-team AL-only with the standard lineups and five bench spots. One catch is that you can use your auction dollars to fill bench spots, and there's only a draft to fill the remaining spots once everyone runs out of money. Here are the results:

A couple notes:

I like my team and accomplished mostly what I set out to, but I realized late in the auction that a league where you can bid on reserves changes the end-game dynamic. Normally my strategy of buying stars and then being patient to snap up bargains late has no downside, but in this case, I found myself waiting for that perfect $5 or $6 OF while good $3 ones were being snapped up by filled-up teams for their reserve. While I'd rather have better starters, in a league of this depth quality reserves matter a lot.

Another thing worth noting is the non-experts weren't fish by any means - the auction moved about as quickly as LABR - except for some hiccups due to being online and using a chatroom/skype - and everyone knew the player pool extremely well. I expect it to be a tough, competitive league.

Finally, if any of you are poker players, we're partnering with CardRunners and figuring out ways to get discounts on subscriptions there for RotoWire subscribers. (Terms are still being worked out).

I know common conjecture is that Strasburg remains int he minors until Late May to avoid super 2 status. What about bringing him up in early April? This would delay his free agency time a full year, while the downside would be upping his arbitration timeline. With and early april start to his career, he would get 4 or 5 more home starts this year, which would net an additional 2.5 mill in revenues from the inevitable sellouts. Could this be worth it? It would fundamentally change strasburgs draft value if we knew that to be the case. Thoughts?

Not sure why you posted this here, but I think the Nats are concerned with his workload, too, so he'll get 15 starts or so. At least that's the plan. The one wrinkle is if he dominates the minors so ridiculously, he could force the team's hand. But we'll see how he fares against players at Double And Triple-A. If he'e merely very good, they probably won't call him up until June.

I wrote it here for lack of a better place. I can't see any reason why he would not come at late May at the latest. After you have passed the likely super two deadline, every home start he does not make in the majors costs the team half a mil in additional revenues. It just seems to me that while everyone assumes late may / early june, an argument can be made for a mid april start date. Especially, as you noted, if he pulls a lincecum and is unhittable (why wouldn't he be?). It seems to me that he is ironically undervalued.

Thanks for answering this unusually placed question.

No problem - I think the other issue is the arm wear - major league innings in front of major league crowds cause more adrenaline, competitiveness, etc. than minor league ones. The Nats will make whatever money they make in the 15 starts they give him whether it's in April or August. And it might be easier to start him late than shut him down early if he's pitching well from a PR perspective. So that's a major factor. It would be tragic if the Nats pushed him for short term revenue and lost a $200 million arm in the process.

For the record, Lincecum wasn't exactly unhittable in his first try. He didn't have true success until his 2nd year.

Just a few things that caught my eye:

Do Analytics Take the Fun Out of Sports?
Apparently that was the topic of one of the presentations at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston last week. The presenter, Yale's Edward Tufte, opined:

Don't let people tell you analytics are reductionist and take the joy out of sports. They mostly just take the stupidity out of sports.

Is he right?

The Problem With Drafting Billy Hamilton
Billy Hamilton went for $28 in the NL LABR auction this past weekend. I discussed this with a fellow writer who participates in Tout Wars with me later this month and we discussed the problem with investing heavily into Hamilton.
