Dalton Del Don's Foolish LABR Weekend Bets

The last two years, Dalton and I have gone to LABR together, (I draft our AL team, he does the NL). Over the course of weekend, we inevitably end up making some bets. (Last year I netted out $30 despite him winning a $50 bet for picking Tim Lincecum as his NL Cy Young sleeper).

This year, we made the following wagers:

  • $20 at 3:1 on the Cavaliers to win the NBA Championship vs. the Field. (Dalton has the Cavs).

  • $10 on Matt Cain vs. Carlos Zambrano (total fantasy value) (I have Zambrano)

  • $5 Plaxico Burress vs. Brandon Marshall (I have Burress)

  • $10 Soriano's HRs vs. the square root of Albert Pujols' OPS. (Pujols must play 145 games) (I have Soriano)

  • $20 Randy Johnson vs. Chien-Ming Wang (I have Wang who I bought for $11 at LABR. Dalton bought Johnson for $12).

  • $20 at 3:1 Maurice Jones-Drew vs. LaDainian Tomlinson total fantasy value. (I have Tomlinson at 3:1).

Incidentally, my sleeper pick for NL CY last year: Rich Hill. (I'm just glad we made it all or nothing and didn't index it to margin of victory).

The square root of Pujols OPS? I don't know if that is cool or if you guys are unconscionable dorks. (I'd point out that, technically speaking, the square root of Pujols OPS is going to be somewhere around 1, but that would make me the dork.)

I like Marshall over Burress by a lot. Marshall's chances of playing a full season seem to be higher, and he's a better player anyway. I suppose the risk that Cutler is not playing for Denver next year hurts Marshall, but one has to think that situation works out eventually.

The LT bet seems reasonable given the injury risk for MJD (as with any RB).

You guys betting cheeseburgers and pizza eh??? rofl Rich Hill cy young sleeper last year eh??? Just missed out on that one.....Eh, least you honest...I was dumb enough to think Corey Patterson would do better than Nate McClouth last year....Here is one that was brought up last year.....Who will have more fantasy points this year....Price, Kershaw, or Gallardo?? Put me down for 3 double cheeseburgers and a large stuffed crust deluxe on Gallardo! ! !

Mark's right about the RB bet, any RB is an injury risk 3:1 is pretty high plus I don't see Sproles getting goal line carries over LT. At first glance I thought that Cain was easily better than Zambrano, but Zambrano could post 8 more wins. BTW, the projections for Zambrano seem very farfetched IMHO, any reasoning behind it?

Liss has some crazy obsession with the Cubs, which he refuses to admit, and regularly overrates them. Hence, the Zambrano and Soriano bets for this year and the Rich Hill debacle from last season.

The Cubs are the only team I know anything about. And Herb why are you even posting here? Everyone knows the only sport you care about is basketball.

If by foolish you mean strong investments for the future, then I agree with you. LeBron is taking over the league.

Herb - Exactly. The only players Chris recommended to me for the NL-only league just so happened to be Cubbies.

Do Analytics Take the Fun Out of Sports?
Apparently that was the topic of one of the presentations at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston last week. The presenter, Yale's Edward Tufte, opined:

Don't let people tell you analytics are reductionist and take the joy out of sports. They mostly just take the stupidity out of sports.

    Is he right?
