Alright, alright, alright... the big game is finally here.  Who you got tonight, Auburn or Oregon?

I'm saying 38-28 Auburn with Cam Newton turning in a Vince Young type performance.  I expect Onterio McCalebb to have a fantastic game on the outside.  Oregon wins if Thomas can have a great game passing the ball.  Jeff Maehl, where you at?

I'm digging the yellow socks for Oregon tonight. Of all the combinations they could have come up with, these are pretty strong.

Auburn has Bo Jackson at the coin flip, Oregon has Ahmad Rashad... advantage Tigers.

What's up with the slippery surface on the kickoff?

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 5:43:00 PM
Not sure, could be a cleats issue, aka a Nike issue.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 5:44:00 PM
As entered that in, I saw the Auburn player's knee buckle with Under Armour.

On: 1/10/2011 5:45:00 PM
Completely unnecessary pitch by Thomas on the second down play.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 5:46:00 PM
What a terrible idea to pitch that, he could have had at least the first down, with maybe more.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 5:46:00 PM
Love the way the Tigers DE stayed at home there.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 5:48:00 PM
How do you miss that block? Tigers lucky to have the ball here on 3rd.

By: Erickson
On: 1/10/2011 5:48:00 PM
Adams should have had that - very catchable ball.

By: Kevin Payne
On: 1/10/2011 5:50:00 PM
Newton had someone open downfield for six had he gotten the throw off on the fumble play.

By: Kevin Payne
On: 1/10/2011 5:52:00 PM
Oregon is going to have to throw the ball if they want to win.

By: Erickson
On: 1/10/2011 5:52:00 PM
Auburn has a ton of speed on the defensive perimeter.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 5:53:00 PM
Great screen call there. Sure we'll see plenty of that with Auburn's aggressive front four.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 5:54:00 PM
First mistake is a huge on... Darron Thomas pick.

Oregon's socks are killing my eyes.

On: 1/10/2011 5:57:00 PM
A bunch of highlighters out there.

By: Kevin Payne
On: 1/10/2011 5:58:00 PM
Wow, where was he going with that?

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 5:58:00 PM
And another pick... this one right to Cliff Harris.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 6:03:00 PM

On: 1/10/2011 6:03:00 PM
Great pressure by Fairley.

By: Kevin Payne
On: 1/10/2011 6:03:00 PM
Umm, how do you not block Fairley?

By: Erickson
On: 1/10/2011 6:05:00 PM
Oregon clearly was drilled to stay at home when Newton goes outside the pocket.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 6:07:00 PM
Don't think I've seen Cam Newton have this much pressure on him all season.

By: Erickson
On: 1/10/2011 6:07:00 PM
Auburn's special teams are fast, fast, fast. Three returns, no room to return on all three.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 6:12:00 PM
Only first quarter, but I'm expecting a big play against a tired Auburn defense... These plays are almost too fast for me.

By: assman
On: 1/10/2011 6:12:00 PM
Oregon so far is the better team!

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 6:13:00 PM
Lets see about this Tigers red zone defense.

By: Kevin Payne
On: 1/10/2011 6:14:00 PM
Wonder what the odds were for no points in the first quarter. Not liking my over prediction.

By: assman
On: 1/10/2011 6:14:00 PM
Thought he would bust it in.

By: Kevin Payne
On: 1/10/2011 6:15:00 PM

Nick Fairley, HELLO!

By: assman
On: 1/10/2011 6:18:00 PM
Auburn lucky the score is what it is.

By: Erickson
On: 1/10/2011 6:19:00 PM
Settling for three here seems like bringing a knife to a gunfight. Not that they had any choice after that third down play.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 6:19:00 PM
Same goes for Oregon with their two turnovers.

By: assman
On: 1/10/2011 6:19:00 PM
What were Ahmad Rashad's numbers in college because he really didn't do a whole lot in the NFL!

By: assman
On: 1/10/2011 6:20:00 PM
I see Oregon beating themselves right now.....should be ahead by more.

By: Erickson
On: 1/10/2011 6:22:00 PM
Nice start for Oregon, but better work on that "not blocking Fairley in the red zone" scheme.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 6:23:00 PM
Auburn not running the ball with Newton much.

By: assman
On: 1/10/2011 6:23:00 PM

On: 1/10/2011 6:28:00 PM
Not sure he had possession.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 6:30:00 PM
Nice catch and run... Harris' elbow looked to be down on the pick on review.

By: assman
On: 1/10/2011 6:30:00 PM
Middle was wide open, they should come back to that. Ducks need to adjust.

By: andtinez

He is the only slow one I've seen.

By: Jason Thornbury
On: 1/10/2011 6:33:00 PM
Wow. What a game.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 6:33:00 PM

TV timeout by Mussberger.

By: Jason Thornbury
On: 1/10/2011 6:34:00 PM
assman, Bobby Moore was an All-American at Oregon, and Ahmad Rashad had a good pro career (Pro Bowler, at least).

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 6:36:00 PM
Wow, what a smart call there.

By: andtinez

Cam Newton always falls forward... it's a skill of his at this point.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 6:49:00 PM
Kick it, don't be stupid.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 6:50:00 PM
WHAT?! That's why you kick it.

By: assman
On: 1/10/2011 6:50:00 PM
Wow....he dropped it and Newton underthrew him.....WOW!

By: assman
On: 1/10/2011 6:51:00 PM
Remember that in the 4th quarter.

By: Jason Thornbury
On: 1/10/2011 6:52:00 PM
OK, not a great pass, but you have to catch that. It went through his hands. Don't blame Newton on that.

By: Jason Thornbury
On: 1/10/2011 6:53:00 PM
Great play call, though.

What is this a spring baseball score?

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 6:56:00 PM

Auburn with a flurry of plays now.

Assman, what say you on that personal foul?

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 7:06:00 PM
Terrible clock management there.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 7:11:00 PM
Just kneel it.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 7:12:00 PM
But why would you kneel it when you've got this offense I suppose.

By: assman
On: 1/10/2011 7:14:00 PM
Sorry, was away......clock management was aweful.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 7:14:00 PM
38 yards rushing for the Ducks at half... that's not who they are.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 7:15:00 PM
Cam Newton with -2 rushing yards (includes sacks)... that's not who he is.

By: Erickson
On: 1/10/2011 7:26:00 PM
Going for it from the half-yard line was easily a good decision. Your offense, not your defense, got you there in the first place. The safety only illustrates that even the downside isn't so down.

By: assman
On: 1/10/2011 7:30:00 PM
Get ready for the Ducks 2nd half!

By: assman

Ducks have to contain Newton.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 7:40:00 PM
Newton running more this half, he's money on 3rd downs.

By: assman

He's money on 1st downs!

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 7:42:00 PM
Lutzenkirchen... guy is money.

By: Erickson
On: 1/10/2011 7:42:00 PM
Giving Cam Newton 10 minutes to throw doesn't seem like a good idea.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 7:42:00 PM
Lutzenkirchen's 14th catch of the season... 5 for TDs.

By: assman
On: 1/10/2011 7:43:00 PM
Huge stop!

By: assman
On: 1/10/2011 7:44:00 PM
OK Oregon offense....WHERE ARE YA?????

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 7:44:00 PM
Has anyone figured out what Oregon's big weird signs on offense mean? One has a picture of Scott Van Pelt on it.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 7:49:00 PM
Tough to call Fairley not a dirty player seeing that and given his resume.

By: assman
On: 1/10/2011 7:49:00 PM
Penalty like that can spark a team....stupid!

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 7:51:00 PM
And there's the Nick Fairley I like to see, the clean one.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 7:52:00 PM
Mega, mega, mega hold on that play.

By: assman
On: 1/10/2011 7:53:00 PM
Ducks need to spread it!

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 7:56:00 PM
Nice stop by the Tigers, their defense has made great 2nd half adjustments all season long.

By: assman
On: 1/10/2011 7:58:00 PM
I have to ask....does anyone here have a favorite Cuban cigar they smoke?

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 7:58:00 PM
#76 for Auburn has a huge club on his right arm... thing looked like a toy Hulk arm.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 7:59:00 PM
How do you over throw him?

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 8:05:00 PM
That Oregon offensive sign was Jim Rome, a Ward/Gotti fight, a shamrock, and the word "Groceries." Bizzare.

By: assman
On: 1/10/2011 8:05:00 PM
Great call on 4th down.

WOW, way to step up by the Tigers red zone defense... all Nick Fairley too.

By: Jason Thornbury
On: 1/10/2011 8:08:00 PM
Musburger a little too quick on the TD call there.

By: assman
On: 1/10/2011 8:09:00 PM
Another safety here?.....maybe?

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 8:15:00 PM
80 yards rushing for Oregon in the game... def not getting their 305 tonight.

By: Jason Thornbury
On: 1/10/2011 8:17:00 PM
assman, I don't have a favorite Cuban cigar, but I do have a favorite Cuban cigar quote. When asked if his desire for smoking Cuban cigars amounted to supporting the Communists, Alexander Haig said, "I prefer to think of it as burning down Cuba's only cash crop."

Auburn starting to let the clock run.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 8:40:00 PM
The 3rd down conversions are heavy in Auburns favor tonight.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 8:46:00 PM
Oregon needs to get back to basics... running the ball.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 8:48:00 PM
Auburn's d-line has been outstanding tonight... only 77 yards rushing for the Ducks.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 8:51:00 PM
Uh-oh... that's not good for Auburn.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 8:53:00 PM
Color me unimpressed with Darron Thomas as a passer.

Huge series here for Oregon... must get that TD & 2pt conversion.

He's clearly down.

By: andtinez
On: 1/10/2011 9:10:00 PM

By: jnowak2799
On: 1/10/2011 9:15:00 PM
Big ups to the refs for not BLOWING the quick whistle, that's how you're supposed to officiate a big game, let the play develop, if the Auburn runner was down replay would of caught it, NFL referees need to take notes on this game.

By: Jason Thornbury
On: 1/10/2011 9:18:00 PM
That was a fun game. Great way to end the college season.

Your stats of the game... 3rd down conversions: Oregon 5/15, Auburn 9/17. Rushing yards: Oregon 81, Auburn 255. Great game by Jeff Maehl, 9 catches for 133 yards.

Just a few things that caught my eye:
  • Alec Martinez's Cup-winning goal celebration? # priceless. I wonder if he'll ever get his gloves back.
  • Henrik Lundqvist stopped the 50th shot of the game. He couldn't stop the 51st. #connsmythe if the Rangers had found a way to come back in this series.
Do Analytics Take the Fun Out of Sports?
Apparently that was the topic of one of the presentations at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston last week. The presenter, Yale's Edward Tufte, opined:

Don't let people tell you analytics are reductionist and take the joy out of sports. They mostly just take the stupidity out of sports.

Is he right?

The Problem With Drafting Billy Hamilton
Billy Hamilton went for $28 in the NL LABR auction this past weekend. I discussed this with a fellow writer who participates in Tout Wars with me later this month and we discussed the problem with investing heavily into Hamilton.
