Week 12 Observations

There was a lot of junk in the Giants-Cowboys game, starting with Victor Cruz losing a fumble (that Dallas returned for a TD) on a play that probably should have been blown dead, but the game was tied at 21 with a few minutes left, and Tony Romo got it done down the stretch against New York's defense.

Fantasy College Basketball Game of the Week: Tulsa at Creighton

Perry Missner takes a look at Doug McDermott and the Creighton Bluejays in their win over Tulsa.

Looking Ahead To Your League Playoffs: RBs

As noted in "Looking Ahead To Your League Playoffs: QBs", Week 12 of the regular season is not too early to start thinking about how to best position your roster for your league playoffs. Next up are the running backs (statistics thru Week 11)...

Market Watch: Justin Verlander

Remember the mechanical tweaks that Justin Verlander made to begin August?

Week 11 Observations

Good job by the refs of picking up the flag on the last play of the Monday Night game.

Market Watch: Jose Dariel Abreu

The White Sox's six-year, $68 million deal with Cuban first baseman Jose Dariel Abreu is larger than the contracts that Yoenis Cespedes and Yasiel Puig received for their respective big league clubs. As unknown rotisserie commodities, Cespedes and Puig turned out to be huge bargains. Will Abreu's draft-day cost this spring follow suit?

Week 10 Observations

There are two main problems with the Giants right now: (1) Terrible special teams; and (2) Eli Manning.

Week 9 Observations

I caught only two hours of action Sunday while eating at a Taqueria in Mexico City, but the way they show games there actually seems better than the Red-Zone channel as they cut to the action for several key plays at a time, no matter where the team is on the field. You end up getting a better-rounded sense of the games (though maybe that's because there were only six early ones). In any event, here's what I took away:

Bill Russell Statue Unvieled

Lost in much of the Red Sox championship hoopla was the unveiling of the long, I mean REALLY LONG, overdue statue for NBA Hall Of Famer Bill Russell.

La-La-La-L.A. Gets Lord Stanley!
Just a few things that caught my eye:
  • Alec Martinez's Cup-winning goal celebration? # priceless. I wonder if he'll ever get his gloves back.
  • Henrik Lundqvist stopped the 50th shot of the game. He couldn't stop the 51st. #connsmythe if the Rangers had found a way to come back in this series.
Do Analytics Take the Fun Out of Sports?
Apparently that was the topic of one of the presentations at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston last week. The presenter, Yale's Edward Tufte, opined:

Don't let people tell you analytics are reductionist and take the joy out of sports. They mostly just take the stupidity out of sports.

Is he right?
