Week 8 Observations

The running back position is a disaster with even blue-chip producers like Adrian Peterson and LeSean McCoy now in dire team contexts. Doug Martin might be done for the year, Trent Richardson is in a timeshare with Donald Brown, Arian Foster is hurt, C.J. Spiller is hurt and sharing work, Ray Rice is plodding along for a subpar offense and even Matt Forte just lost his starting quarterback for at least a month.

Game 3: Gloves Off The Bench

The difference in tonight's super-tight Game 3 was clear: gloves off the bench. The Cards' new defender did well. The Sox's gloves off the bench showed rust.

Week 7 Observations

To get an idea of how far Trent Richardson's stock has fallen consider the Colts brought in Ahmad Bradshaw to go along with a healthy Vick Ballard this summer because they didn't trust Donald Brown even as their No. 2 back. And when Ballard went down for the year, the Colts traded a first-round pick for Richardson because they still didn't want Brown to be their backup. But against the Broncos, the Colts gave Brown 11 carries and three targets to Richardson's 14 carries, i.e., they installed a 50/50 timeshare. It's like they said: "Brown isn't even good enough to be a backup, but if the alternative is Richardson, he's a co-starter."

Week 7 College Football Thoughts

Some thoughts and notes from Week 7 in the College Football Season...

Week 6 Observations

Brandon Jacobs ran well through wide open lanes against the Bears, but it was hard to keep from wondering how monstrous a day David Wilson would have had should he have stayed healthy. The Giants offensive line has been incapable of blocking anyone this year, so it shows how much the Bears defensive brand has deteriorated. News that Wilson is out only 3-4 weeks with a neck injury might be worse than him going on season-ending IR. Now you can't drop him and free up the spot, and the Giants won't have much of an incentive to rush him back. Moreover, Andre Brown should be back by then too.

Do Analytics Take the Fun Out of Sports?
Apparently that was the topic of one of the presentations at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston last week. The presenter, Yale's Edward Tufte, opined:

Don't let people tell you analytics are reductionist and take the joy out of sports. They mostly just take the stupidity out of sports.

Is he right?

My 12-Team NFBC RotoWire Online Championship Team
I drafted out of the 11-hole for the "Beat Chris Liss" league. I had done a fair amount of research on optimal roster construction from that slot, and I decided I'd go hitter in the first round, three pitchers in 2-4 and then hitting for the next 10 rounds or so before filling in with upside pitchers late. Of course, few battle plans survive the actual war. Here are the results:
