NHL Playoff Observations -- Tuesday

Just a few things that caught my eye:
  • Jonathan Quick was dominant for 73 minutes and 21 seconds. The last four seconds? Not so much. It's too bad that such a dominant performance was marred by such brain fart.
  • Josh Harding is to Jose Theodore as Patrick Kane is to Denis Savard. Discuss.

NFL Draft Recap - Rounds 4-7

Here are a few late-round players with the potential to make an impact during their rookie seasons:

NFL Draft Recap - Rounds 2 and 3

After an uneventful Round 1 for fantasy purposes, Rounds 2 and 3 saw some key skill players come off the board. Let's take a look below:

Fantasy Impact: Offensive Line Draft Selections

As I watched the second and third rounds of the NFL Draft conclude I thought it would be a good idea, since I'm the offensive line specialist here at RotoWire, to compile a ranking of the top-5 most impactful selections from a fantasy perspective.

NFL Draft Wrap - Round 1

With Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III going first and second, the first round of the 2012 NFL draft changed the landscape of fantasy football right off the bat. This year's version could not have been more different. It took over an hour, and eight picks, before anyone was chosen who would make even a small impact in 2013 fantasy football, with speedy receiver Tavon Austin going to the Rams. It was nearly another hour before a quarterback was drafted, with E.J. Manuel going to the Bills. Manuel was the only quarterback taken, and no running backs were chosen. Let's assess.

This should be pretty weird.

Draft Day Mock Draft: The Craziest Mock You'll See

Today is like Christmas for NFL teams. Some teams will have their stockings stuffed with gifts, and some with coal.

Draft Day Mock

Unpredictability at its finest. Draft Day gets me so excited I had to go two rounds.

A Little Knowledge is Dangerous: Overreacting to Velocity Readings Early On

In years past, I would have offered the panicked Tim Lincecum and Roy Halladay owners 50 or 60 cents on their draft-day dollars for their struggling former stars. But even though I intended to offer Hyun-Jin Ryu for Halladay in NL Tout after two starts, I didn't because Halladay's velocity was down. From 92 mph in 2011, to 90.6 last year to 89.7 in four starts this season.

2013 NFL Mock Draft: Two Weeks to Go!

Only Two weeks until the real NFL Draft takes place, and I look like an absolute fool for even trying to predict what actually happens.  I am operating under the assumption that there will not be any trades.  With that being said, I fully expect there to be a significant amount of movement, starting with the Cleveland Browns at pick #6.  This draft isn't loaded with elite talent, but it is a very deep draft and there is a ton of quality that can be found in later rounds.

NHL Trade Deadline Live Blog

So, it appears that Miikka Kiprusoff won't be going to Toronto. Will the Leafs have enough to pry Roberto Luongo from the Canucks? What will be the most outrageous rumor to come out of Toronto today?

Chime in on all this and more here today!

NHL Trade Deadline Eve Live Blog

Usually for a particular sport's trade deadline we wait until the day of the deadline to run a live blog, but there's so much activity today that if we waited, we might get pre-empted. So I thought I'd fire up the blog now - what are your thoughts about the Stars' firesale? How about the Pens' trades from last week?

Needless to say, it's been a great World Cup thus far. The USMNT having some success would be awesome.
La-La-La-L.A. Gets Lord Stanley!
Just a few things that caught my eye:
  • Alec Martinez's Cup-winning goal celebration? # priceless. I wonder if he'll ever get his gloves back.
  • Henrik Lundqvist stopped the 50th shot of the game. He couldn't stop the 51st. #connsmythe if the Rangers had found a way to come back in this series.
Do Analytics Take the Fun Out of Sports?
Apparently that was the topic of one of the presentations at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston last week. The presenter, Yale's Edward Tufte, opined:

Don't let people tell you analytics are reductionist and take the joy out of sports. They mostly just take the stupidity out of sports.

Is he right?

The Problem With Drafting Billy Hamilton
Billy Hamilton went for $28 in the NL LABR auction this past weekend. I discussed this with a fellow writer who participates in Tout Wars with me later this month and we discussed the problem with investing heavily into Hamilton.
