Don Nelson Hiring
Honestly, what's the point of hiring Don Nelson? He's okay, he won't embarrass you, but look how much better the Mavs got as soon as he left. The Flip Saunderses, the Don Nelsons, much too soft for the NBA - no way they win a title. If you want to win a title, you need a Pat Riley, a Phil Jackson, a Larry Brown, a Rick Carlisle, a Gregg Popovich, an Avery Johnson - someone who's not going to take any crap and who will get those guys to play proper defense. Scott Skiles is another guy I could see winning. But Don Nelson? Take a chance on a young guy who could be the next Avery Johnson. At least there's some upside. Why settle for a known mediocrity? Isn't the idea to win a title, not just be respectable.

Late Nights and Early Mornings with USA Basketball
Two games and two victories for the USA, so there's nothing to complain about. It's kind of weird hearing how quiet it is at the stadiums in Japan. You expect some kind of wild cheering, but nothing much (though LeBron and D. Wade got some applause). Puerto Rico (54.3% shooting) gave the USA some fits in the first game as the Americans had the habit of not playing a lot of defense and giving up open shots on the perimeter (10-of-16 3-pointers), but that was overcome because of the sheer depth of talent on the team. Coach K can bring guys like Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Dwight Howard and Joe Johnson off the bench. I thought I would see more design and offensive sets, but it's been all solo stuff and points in transition off turnovers. They played much better against China in the second game and actually played defense on Yao. It gets a little tougher on Tuesday against Slovenia and then Italy on Wednesday. Set your alarm clocks for the 6:30 am ET (3:30 am PT) starts.
Suggs Fails Physical
I have to say I'm glad to hear it. With the Jets needing a running back, I'm eager to see something interesting happen. If Thomas Jones gets moved, then we get to see Cedric Benson carry the load. If Michael Turner were to go, he could be a star. Chris Brown? Then we get to see LenDale White move up to the second or third round. But Lee Suggs? When I read the news, I thought: "What a waste."
Yankees '07 Lineup
With Bobby Abreu under contract, and talk that Gary Sheffield will move to first base, here's the Yanks projected lineup for next year:
- CF Johnny Damon
- SS Derek Jeter
- 3B Alex Rodriguez
- DH Jason Giambi
- 1B Gary Sheffield
- LF Hideki Matsui
- RF Bobby Abreu
- C Jorge Posada
- 2B Robinson Cano
Granted, Posada's getting old, but he's gone .284/.388/.465 this year, and Sheffield's old, too, but this is a devastating lineup if healthy - one that could challenge the record for runs scored.
Devil Rays Prospects
After trading for Joel Guzman, look how stacked the Devil Rays are with young players. Delmon Young, B.J. Upton, Elijah Dukes, Rocco Baldelli, Carl Crawford, Dioneer Navarro, Guzman, Jonny Gomes, Jorge Cantu, Scott Kazmir, Jeff Niemann - the oldest among them is Gomes at 25. If Young and Dukes behave, this could be a very good nucleus going forward.
