Apathy Biggest Issue If/When NHL Lockout Ends?

The news that both sides are actually sitting across from each other may be cause for celebration but even if the lockout is resolved in the near term, has too much damage been done to the fan base?

I had written this elsewhere but would love to get the Rotowire view: What does this have to do with apathy? Fans, like most of us on this site, are angry. Angry that the game we all love has been taken from us by both sides, who cannot find a way to sit down and bridge the gap, regardless of how wide they believe it is. When and if they settle, regardless of the length of the absence, we likely will be back. The bigger key is a quote that I had seen in another blog: "The owners and the players don't care about us, I am done caring about them." That apathy is what will kill the future of the sport after all the gains made in the past year or two. If casual fans don't care, then the potential for the game to grow and flourish is minimized. Couple that with businesses who may not see the benefit of sponsorship due to decreased ratings and interest, and you have what could be a deadly combination.

This may be the NHL and NHLPA's last chance to get close to a full season and not lose the interest of the casual and die hard fans, don't blow it.

Fully agree Jan. I'm a Kings fan and the Cup last year seems like a distant memory. With football, the baseball Hot Stove league, and of course hoops, I'm not really missing it.

Yep, fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. I miss hockey some, but this is ludicrous.

For me it's less apathy and more anger. The whole stoppage is clearly ridiculous on so many levels. I'm done trying to figure out whom to blame, done caring about it, and am barely following the news at this point.

Then I get all philosophical and question the amount of time and effort I spend on fantasy sports of whatever flavour. That in itself is ridiculous. Do something productive you lazy bastard!

Maybe it's all a good thing... this could be the winter we all have time to finally write that novel or renovate the sunroom.

Or just sit around all day, eat corn chips and masturbate, which is much more likely. Hmmm... anyone running a pool based on the World Curling Tour?

I'm not apathetic, I just don't care. Sounds like greed is taking over and with time running out, a deal will probably be completed in the next week. I wonder how much Big Buff weighs right now?

Canadian fans are the most loyal and honestly, we're just all going with the flow. Fans here are just waiting; they don't really even care. They know it'll be settled and we'll all go back. It's the Canadian way.

Interesting Spring Performances, Part One: The NL
As spring training ambles nonchalantly towards the finish line, it's always fun to take a look at spring stats to see who really jumps off the page and might be making some kind of statement or other...
My AL Tout Wars team
We did the AL Tout Wars draft Saturday morning, once again in "The Bubble" at the Sirius/XM studios. It was a different Tout experience than my usual drafts at Tout - lately I haven't paid for closers there, or spent much on my outfielders. But I'm also one to take the values where they fall. So to that end, here's my squad:
My NFBC Recap
I have never been one to hold up to peer pressure well. Since Peter, Jeff, and Chris did a NFBC challenge, I had to join the cool kids and do one too.

My entry in the RotoWire Fantasy Baseball Online Championship was Monday night. Here's my quick take on the draft - this is a 12-team mixed league, 5x5 categories, 30 rosters spots (23 active), with no trades in the league. It has a top prize of $50,000 and a league prize of $1,400.
